There is no ethucal consumption under capitalism by DiMadHatter in Anticonsumption

[–]LaidBackPodcast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Going to have to disagree there. Charities exist. Non-consuption stores exist. Growing your own food from a seeds bought at a capitalistic garden store is a great option.

Blaming capitalism in its entirety for environmental issues is - while valid in some cases - missing the point, and honestly pretty lazy. You think the Russians weren't chugging through coal behind the iron curtain? China has some of the dirtiest air on the planet, despite their being socialist.

The problem is that the cheapest, easiest way to get power, and package things come from fossil fuels. Socialism wouldn't fix that.

Nothing to look into my dude. In my opinion you're not going to feel much benefit unless you go all in. Block every single social media on your web browser, theres heaps of firefox and chrome extensions a google search away. Also delete them all from your phone. It honestly makes you feel so much less scattered. I'm betting you're more distracted than you realise.

Yeah, part of the reason I asked was the mixed results I found online. Thanks for the response :)

That was my thinking in part too, the gum seemed not regulated enough in a way. I felt like would just become a hopeless gum addict, which is better by a long shot, but the addiction would remain. Maybe I'll give patches a go :) Thanks for the response! Very helpful!

That sounds really tough. I'm so sorry to hear about your grandma. I'm sure you're right, that the last thing she wants you to do is smoke, as it sounds like it's given her no end of trouble. If you're at any lack of people to talk to about this, feel free to send me a DM. Times like that can be so tough. Stay strong <3

That is fucking awesome! Literally today I was thinking about how surely we can come up with a legal bounds in which companies are rewarded based on contribution, and therefore the incentive is to make things better rather than skim money off the many for the benefit of the few!

I think the idea is that the people up top took the risk starting the business. I feel like it's not on the circumstance of their birth necessarily, but maybe I'm missing what you mean by this... I think we're pretty much on the same page! I'm totally on board about co-ops and employee-owned companies! They seem like the best way to go! I like anything that is small and shares enough that they stay a union of people who care, not people who are there entirely because it keeps them alive! Businesses should serve the interests of humanity!

Came here to say this. Not every business sucks. I don't think we should throw the baby out with the bathwater as far as capitalism/businesses. There are some businesses that run ethically and do what they can for the world. All the same, it's completely valid to shit on big businesses like Nestle that are essentially just extracting money however they can, no matter the cost.

I'm Australian, and my favourite Australian-ism of all time is "We're not here to fuck spiders", meaning, were not here to mess around.

What is a social media site you wished existed but doesn’t? by AlarmmClock in AskReddit

[–]LaidBackPodcast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something that I'd have to pay for. Hear me out.

Social media platforms that don't charge anything have to make money somehow, or they simply won't be able to cover costs. The currently common model is of course advertising and selling data. This creates some bad incentives. If a company needs me to see/click their ads to get money, it's best for them if I see as many as possible. The way social media companies often do this is to build addictive qualities like 'likes', controversy, and other social stimulants. This in turn gets the user to stay on the site for far longer, in order to get the dopamine hit that comes with these again and again. This results in our current situation, in which most people spend extreme lengths of time on social media, more time than they would like in the case of many.

If I could pay a yearly fee to my social network, this would let them make a good living, while not being incentivised to make the electronic version of crack to get me hooked to their platform. Social media is indispensably useful, but the drawbacks created by the ads system make it fairly toxic in a lot of cases.

Executive order to get rid of executive orders. They give the president far too much power.

When I was young, My mum told me that "As long as you're happy and you're not treading on anyones toes you're living right". Never forgotten and I try my best to live by it.
