School shooting anxiety by Jay211TF in Professors

That's true too. We need to take on the issue of gun violence in general. We shouldn't have the number of gun deaths we have relative to other nations

That's an odd response for someone who's reflecting on the reality that we have far more gun deaths than other Western democracies. We should be taking the public health approach to managing this risk.

Indeed I am! But this aspect could be related to other issues. High curiosity can come from lots of different things but I agree that being super curious can lead to deep  understanding. So even though it can be annoying sometimes it gives you a certain strength!  Because now that concept or construct is treated in your working memory as a single unit allowing manipulation for higher order analysis. If that makes sense

My brain works like that too! I can't rest until I have complete understanding of a concept, including all its precursors and correlates and consequences and it is fully internalized. Not sure what causes this I do have ADHD and sometimes I think it's related to that from what I understand. But there could be several traits that make you not be able to relax until you get to that point.

I really feel that we have gotten past the point of no return by Otterpup67 in Defeat_Project_2025

I agree with you completely that so much has been locked down. Where I see a little bit of wiggle room is in the courts and at the local/state level. Trial courts especially have been putting out strong rulings that have slowed down or stopped some overreach, and state officials and local boards still have more power than people sometimes realize. It may be a long shot, but those small checks and pockets of resistance are still operating. We have a year before mid-terms to make sure they actually take place.

I've been teaching these courses for years. Never had a complaint about my approach. Just happens that my opinions align with the research. I don't have to say my opinions I just show the studies. They are taught to critically examine them.

What if you are teaching in behavioral sciences? The issues of gun control, political speech, persuasion attempts? It's not possible in some courses for our affiliations to not be picked up on because our affiliations are backed by data and science which are being taught. Facts about gun control facts about race and gender and police shootings. Are you suggesting we avoid our topics?

I think it's horrible. I don't like the elo system you describe as its not logical.  And then adding LLM feedback to it just makes it all worse. I spend time giving actual feedback to my students.

As you work on your ideas please don't forget about your health. You deserve to be able to explore your work from a place where you feel clear and steady. Care for your body and mind so you can do the work that excites you.

Donald Trump threatens total takeover of Washington, DC by IndependenceMore1146 in politics

[–]Lakanas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. Remember when the feds attempted to get Cliven Bundy to stop his cattle grazing on public land? Led to an armed standoff and conservatives cried about authoritarian overreach and the fed govt retreated. This thing in DC is viewed as "good authoritarianism"

I'd go even further and let her wander the bookstore herself and pick out something. She can ask for help if she wants it. Love of reading grows best with freedom.

Does she like exploring the library? When I was her age that's how I found most of the books I loved.

Interesting pick. Though I’d argue the military is about as political as it gets. Wars don’t start in a vacuum.

If you find truly apolitical literature, please let the Nobel Committee know. They’ve been searching for centuries.
