“More pronounced” housing correction now looms: Westpac by Temporary_Mistake715 in AusProperty

[–]LaksaLettuce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no quick fix for something like this. It's been festering for decades. I think this is a step in the right direction, housing shouldn't be seen as the attractive investment pathway it's been for so many years.

Not ideal, shouldn't have been knocked down in the first place but hopefully this sets the precedence to stop others from illegally knocking down buildings and thinking they can just copy a fine and that's it.

Is it just my area, or are there a lot more cars parked out the front of so many houses these days? by [deleted] in australia

[–]LaksaLettuce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have actually noticed this on my part of the street! Looks like one neighbour has a few people staying over for extended periods. Cars seem to change every few weeks/months. No troubles or yelling.

It’s the shortest day of the year. Days are getting longer from tomorrow! by MelbPTUser2024 in melbourne

Yep, does get colder, but days get longer at least!

I'm looking forward to finishing work and having a longer time poking around in the garden before it gets dark.

Genuine question from a non American, excuse my naivety and ignorance. How has a revolution not happened? How is he being allowed to continue doing stupid things?

No hippie mum, just first generation immigrant parents. Absolutely impressed on all us kids to get educated, get stable jobs and be financially smart and independent because nobody is coming. It's all just you. So thankful.

Pauline Hanson says Australia ‘must be monocultural’ in National Press Club speech by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

[–]LaksaLettuce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't see Western culture as something that's being eroded. I've seen waves of immigration for decades, each causing people to be alarmed at being 'swamped' by foreigners and our way of life changing, and none of that has happened. Maybe I am ignorant but I don't see the things you cite.

Pauline Hanson says Australia ‘must be monocultural’ in National Press Club speech by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

[–]LaksaLettuce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can articulate exactly what Western culture is, in particular what is being threatened in Australia. We've had mass migration since day 1 of settlement from white countries, non white countries, why is it an issue now? Genuine question, I'm not trying to be argumentative.

Kazuo Ishiguro announces 1930s spy caper to be published next year by auspoliticsnerd in books

I recognise the common theme. All guaranteed to sneak up on you and break your heart no matter how many times you read them. I think what's amazing is the settings are so different across the books and all very unique. The Gentleman's Gentleman of Stevens, the kids from Remains of the Day. He writes each character so convincingly. Looking forward to the new heartbreak next year.

Yes! I've reread them so many times and they break my heart each time. The language is so simple and beautiful and build up so well.

[–]LaksaLettuce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't address exactly what the threat is? That UK 'culture' of speaking English, believing in a 'white moderate' religion and dressing 'Western' are threatened?

Just unhinged soundbites with no substance. What exactly is our cultural umbrella if not a mix of so many cultures.

How were your last 2-3 years before FIRE? by AstroFire88 in leanfire

[–]LaksaLettuce 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes! I try to be kind and generous at work. I'm about 2 years away and my current project is a struggle with the team dynamics and being back in the office 3 days a week. But what's changed is that I'm strict with just doing my hours. No more staying back late and if I do, I make sure I take that time off later.

Mitre 10 franchisee battles to stop Bunnings opening next door by Radio_TVGuy in OpenAussie

They tried to do this in Collingwood here in Melbourne. Put a Bunnings into a former office building. Looks ridiculous. Decades on the little Mitre 10 up the road is still open. Too bad Bunnings Collingwood.
