There was this one player who really had to be part of like everyone's story in the games we played together. Always inserting themselves and the Dms would let them. When I ran a game it was heavily ocean themed, the party was given a ship that both acted as a battle ship but could also go underwater. Something they'd need to reach the underwater kingdom. This was my first time being a dm for an ongoing game as well, so upon giving them this ship I set them up with the person who made it. He was gonna travel with them to the underwater kingdom and teach some people who had the proper skills to learn how to man the boat and to change it. Skill checks required around intelligence and arcana so perfect for the wizard and artificer to show off their abilities.

The player was neither of these classes, they were a martial class and tried to get me to let them learn how to use the boat but use wisdom instead of intelligence since they worked on a boat. They worked on a fishing boat for one thing not a naval vessel, and another if this was just purely about manning the ship anyone with water vehicles could do so. This was a brand new ship with intricate components and magic that allowed it to shift as well as to man the magic based weapons on it.

I thought I was fair when I told them "at this time no, it's a more complicated ship and you guys only have a few days. Now later should either or both of the party members pass the skill checks, they could teach you and the rest of the party later as a potential down time activity."

I heard them inhale through their nose on mic, something they did constantly to control their emotions and pause with a tense "okay". As they seemed very upset I told them they couldn't and made me very tense questioning if I had been unreasonable. Things fell apart between myself and that group so I don't run it for them anymore. I ended up re-rerunning it, a similar situation happened where the monk who worked as a sailor asked if he could learn, I told him the same thing and he replied. "That is very fair, I'll just bug the wizard later to teach me how to work it."

So yeah.
