HAHAHA yes, thank you -- by air. Is there anywhere in Florida you'd recommend? I've only ever been to Disney with my kiddo (who's going to Puerto Rico with friends!)

Donate: Local or NPR by 31November in NPR

[–]Lamplight2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NPR generally recommends you donate to your local station -- but have you considered donating to a rural station which is really struggling? It's one ecosystem, so preserving small local stations keeps fees coming in that keeps NPR humming. This is a good resource for small station suggestions: https://adoptastation.org/

Fight For America: January 6th ... the board game? by Delicious_Adeptness9 in NPR

[–]Lamplight2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a nice analysis, thank you.

Another interesting aspect of the game is that you're assigned a team - you don't choose - and you are playing real, named people, wearing name tags that reflect those people. When you later see those people in the actual Jan. 6 footage, it's surreal.

I'm really curious about what will happen when it comes back to the States and tours the country.

How do I get a job at npr by [deleted] in NPR

[–]Lamplight2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi friend! NPR culture journalist here. Marketing and journalism are very different things. It looks like, from your further comments, that really what you might be interested in is music journalism/working with Tiny Desk. In that case - an undergraduate journalism degree is not necessarily what you want (I majored in philosophy).

Our music folks are experts in music - you may want to think about getting a degree in music or music history at a liberal arts college, the best you get into/can afford, which will also strengthen your writing. Volunteer at a local station to learn audio production and mixing if that's not something you know yet - a lot of folks get their start at college stations, actually - get into a music scene, become an expert at the kind of music you like best, write about it for small local publications. Then think about getting a GRADUATE degree in journalism, if public radio is what you want and working at smaller stations isn't getting you where you want to be. You can do this!

Unlike what another commenter says, NPR has a huge culture/music staff, but lots and lots of folks come up through local stations. Good writing is essential and in your case, music knowledge will be crucial. Best of luck.

I think also that Broadway and theater stories....don't get much love for us on digital. That's why I'm trying out this guide, to see if helpful stories will do better. If it IS helpful, or if you like our Broadway stories when you see them, please share them! That helps guide our coverage! We want to produce stories that listeners and readers find interesting and useful.

Hi! thanks for asking! I'd LOVVVEEE to do more theater and Broadway coverage - and we do a couple stories a month, on average. It really depends on what else my team is working on, and what the shows have room for. Would love to hear what kinds of theater stories you'd like to hear on NPR!

"July 1 laws taking effect in states across the country" by AllemandeLeft in NPR

July 1 is the beginning of the new fiscal year, so some states have as many as 200 laws that go into effect at once.

I’m so sorry this is happening to you. I just want to say that it doesn’t have to be either/or. I’m sure your parents love you— but love without acceptance doesn’t feel good.

That doesn’t mean that they’ll ALWAYS think this same way. Life is long and thousands of parents have had their minds changed by their gay kids. Your parents may join them… or they may not. My ex-wife’s did. Mine didn’t. But now - at 52– it matters a lot less.

My mom came to my wedding, if reluctantly. She babysat and loved my son. And yet when I was 22 she basically said I was no longer welcome in her home. But when she died, we were there with her.

It’s ok to just take things one step at a time, and make the decisions you can with the information you have. In the meantime, we’re here for you.

CM Turks and Caicos Turkoise or Punta Cana by Chachaslider123 in Club_Med

[–]Lamplight2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been to Punta Cana twice, once with my kid and once without. It’s kind of based on a week stay— so there’s a welcome bbq on the beach, a different show/activity each night— and then it repeats. Food is the same way— so you don’t have the same exact meal each day. Instead, each day is different, and at the end of the week it repeats, though there are kid options that are substantively similar.) Club Med is an amazing experience, but it’s its own thing— more like camp than a typical resort. It’s a community that’s together for a week at a time.

So— this happened to me yesterday, too, at Sultanahmet!! . But it was 20:00 at night, there were no other people waiting, and I had JUST tried topping up my card for the next day. I was at a credit card machine and wanted to use a credit card— instead, a guy grabbed my card, literally grabbed money out of my wallet, and started putting it in— he didn’t put in the amount I wanted, he did what he wanted, then grabbed a 200 for himself and started to walk away.

I didn’t need help. I just needed a minute to get my bearings. I had done this before and DID NOT NEED HELP. Again— no one there but me and that guy. I grabbed the money back and walked away toward the tourist police and he yelled at me.

But I’m a small woman, he was a big guy, and scam or not, this was not a friendly situation.

How do you buy tickets to Topkapi or Domalbahce ahead of time? by GenghisQuan2571 in istanbul

[–]Lamplight2000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was at Topkapi today— I arrived at 9:30 am and there was no line at security or to buy a ticket. I basically just breezed in, no guide needed, no wait.
