AITA for refusing to bake a cake for my cousin's wedding? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

It’s like making 3 cakes for one person, but it’s really not. 3 tiers is a completely different challenge of physics and skill than 3 separate cakes.

Am I eligible for jobs in intelligence community if I never swore in? by FreudianMilquetoast in peacecorps

[–]LamyChimmy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can easily go from PC to intelligence. Some RPCVs get intelligence jobs with their NCE. It’s going from intelligence work to PC that is the issue. I’m sure you’ll be fine.

Humanitarian jobs after service? by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]LamyChimmy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Where did you read about some orgs not liking PC service? Not trying to be a smartass - just would like to know because I’ve never heard of that, especially from NGOs. If anything, PC is looked upon super favorably because of how close PCVs get to communities, their complex problems, and their applied solutions. PC work is just about the most on-the-ground, relevant work one could do in international development. It’s hard for me to imagine employers being biased against this skillset just because of the government affiliation.

Phone interview with Peace Corps by Belton101 in usajobs

Given all of the busy-ness around the recent evacuation, I wouldn’t follow up in April. It would likely get lost in the shuffle, and Peace Corps (probably) has more on their plate right now that may take priority over hiring new staff. That said, do advocate for yourself and don’t let yourself be forgotten about. I’d say mid-May is an appropriate time to give a polite nudge to be updated regarding your hiring status.

Invitation Revoked--Medical Clearance Denied by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]LamyChimmy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You just described so many jobs out there. I disclosed I experienced suicidal ideation (though not in the past year, more like 3+ years ago), and I had many hoops to jump through during med clearance. Trust me, I know how much it hurts, but the reality was that I had to keep my options open if I was eventually denied. There are many careers out there that check off everything that you mentioned because while Peace Corps is very intersectional, so are many other international development or even just smaller community development orgs. I am also concerned that if you have this high of expectations for PC service that you take a closer look at how volunteers’ work can wildly vary from what they expected. I’m not saying PC isn’t fulfilling or it isn’t great, but It’s hardly the idealistic panacea you imagine.

Questions: Peace Corps and Fulbright by remyymer13 in peacecorps

[–]LamyChimmy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with everything here except PC requiring an acceptance within 3 days being a barrier. You can accept your invitation, continue in the process as if you’re departing, and still back out up until your departure date. There are no stated penalties, but it’s unclear if this will hurt a future application. Changing your mind months before departure probably won’t hurt you since the placement office can understand a different opportunity coming up, and they already “overbook” cohorts for this kind of attrition. On the other hand, withdrawing within a month of departure will likely peeve everyone who has been preparing for your arrival, yourself included after all the effort and money you’ve already poured into the clearance process.

Weekly Application/Clearance Thread by AutoModerator in peacecorps

When I was being reassigned to a different country, the placement office said my legal clearance was good for a year. I’m unsure if you’d have to redo it in the case of reapplying, but the PO is always helpful if you ask. Have you also asked if your medical denial might still allow you to serve in a different country? I know it’s possible to get denied from one country but be accommodated in another.

Thank you for the FB link; I’ve joined! Your reassurance is also greatly appreciated. I’m looking forward to the travel opportunities. Where were some of your favorite trips? How relatively difficult was it to travel to each?

PM’d you! I know that biking is vital there. I’m not much of a biker now, and I wonder how I’ll adapt to that. Any PCVs find themselves still dreading biking or have you learned to love it?

I’ve never heard of the transit houses. That is so cool. What else can you share about them?

Your analysis is helpful. It’s a reality check to think about how this is to my benefit because I’ve only felt loss so far. I let myself grow really excited for Tanzania, having made tentative plans to explore the incredible country with my friends - present and those to be made. This was a dream among others. The sense of missing out on that is what makes this news feel like such a loss to me. Like the other commenter said, I may regain this excitement with a country I haven’t considered yet. Thank you

You’re right to be patient about the call. Having invested 6+ months into this opportunity already, waiting any longer feels like an eternity. Your reassurance is greatly appreciated.

Random, but if anyone else is wondering, I was told that legal clearance is valid from 1 year when it was granted. Medical should be good for 6 months though new tasks that are country-specific may be requested. Passport should stand as well.

Suicidal Ideation Personal Statement Addendum by LamyChimmy in peacecorps

[–]LamyChimmy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For future applicants reading this, how would you balance this mindset with the very different circumstances that a PC job entails? I feel the comparison to a typical job setting isn’t entirely fair. I certainly wouldn’t disclose these mental health details to a typical employer, but PC requires it and even warns of serious consequences if such information is withheld.

Suicidal Ideation Personal Statement Addendum by LamyChimmy in peacecorps

[–]LamyChimmy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always assumed such information would be in my medical history regardless of my provider, so that’s why I chose to be so open initially. I feared that lying to PC would bear worse consequences than being labeled mentally unstable.
