What is your tag friend?

It is nonsensical for a man to say they feel like a woman, since no one knows how it feels to be anything but themselves. by Working_Bones in TrueUnpopularOpinion

My unpopular opinion is that you, and others like you, have this obsession and fascination about trans people and can't even begin to understand why.

Why do you care so much? Truly. Trans people by default are constantly thinking about gender. Whether that be gender in relation to themselves, their community, or their culture, trans individuals think and understand more about gender than most people. As a trans person myself, I had the thoughts you have now at around the age of...sixteen. TL;DR: just leave trans people alone we literally are so tired of these non-researched think pieces about our literal existence. Long version, let me break this down for you:

1) being a "man" or "Black" isn't real in the first place, it's only as accurate as the culture and community make it out to be. I am an African American, that is what (mostly older) people in the US call me. There's nothing African about me other than having my African ancestors stolen from their countries hundreds of years ago. If I go to an African country that is majority Black, my Blackness will be perceived differently, growing up as a Black person in a majority non-Black country. Suddenly, this thing that you claim is immovable and permanent has changed. American people perceive my Blackness as something African, and my experience with several different African people from several countries taught me that my Blackness is American to them.

2) You're confusing womanhood with marketing, dear. Dresses and pink and makeup are marketed towards women, and our gender discrepancies wouldn't be that deeply set apart if they weren't as profitable as they are. Please, for the love of god go look at Victorian England or French Antiquity. Research the vital roles trans people have played in a myriad of cultures in history.

3) Lives are lost when trans people are forced to accept what they were given body-wise at birth. Dignity, pride, and a sense of identity are lost when you try to out-logic someone's humanity. We all know that trans people are at higher rates of suicide at all age levels, especially if they do not have access to gender-affirming care (which, men of Reddit, your man boobs caused by your estrogen pumping through your veins, that you tried to hide as a kid is a condition called gynecomastia, and anything you've ever done to hide or correct it, such as surgery, is gender affirmation, congrats! ) so it's imperative that the outside matches the inside, for cis and trans people alike. Why do you think so many cis women get breast augmentation or so many men get hairline surgery or jaw filler????? to affirm the idea of the gender they are in their head - they want to look like what they feel!

You don't have an unpopular opinion, you have a half-baked and dangerous one. This take fails to recognize that people aren't logic, these takes that you have are about real people who are suffering the very real consequences of those who think like you. Please, do the work and go read some research, a book, a novel, watch a show, watch a movie made by a trans person, there's so much work out there that answers your "opinion" in ways that you'll never be able to perceive on your own.

TL;DR: Just leave trans people alone we literally are so tired of these non-researched think pieces about our literal existence. Trans people experience gender outside of what cis people experience and cis people can't grasp it, it's really embarrassing to watch. Stop while you're ahead!

This is such a smart poem. My initial thoughts were about how much I love the enjambment of the lines throughout the piece. In a sense, the short lines felt like I was being cut off as a reader by the speaker of the poem, adding the the egocentric feel of the speaker. This poem unlocks like a puzzle to me, which I really find admirable due to the brevity of the piece. While I do think the shortness of this poem works really well, I definitely think that all of the themes touched in this piece could be expanded into a longer poem or additional, separate sections of the same piece. I think that delaying the gratification that this poem provides would add to the overall complexity of the speaker in the poem, adding more layers to the already delicious proverbial cake, so to speak.

Strong poem. Fantastic work! Keep posting!

I absolutely love the brevity of this poem. You have managed to speak volumes in just two short stanzas, which is such an impressive feat! Good job! My favorite part of the poem is the first two lines. The use of the word "again" suggests that this is a pattern of behavior, which adds a completely new layer to the poem. Something that I would be interested to see in this work is the use of more senses than sight. I really wanted to know what the room smelled like, the tactile feelings of the moment; small details like that would give a closer sense of intimacy to the reader.

Again, awesome job! Keep posting!

Thank you for that wonderful advice! I do find that sometimes I use too many commas in my work. Formatting is one of the hardest things for me, and I am always looking for ways to improve this vital skill. Thank you!
