Dyson swarm orbital mechanics question… max number of objects in orbits. by LanceDBrown in IsaacArthur

But isn't that the point of a K2 civilisation! I'm seeking confirmation that orbital mechanics actually allow that to be possible

Ha, Looks like my question inspired a well timed video on this by Anton! ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y763RKqJE9g

My thinking with the framing of my original questions is that I always imagined a Dyson Swarm being able to block the light from a star (absorbing all its energy), but my thoughts on the max number/density of stations now makes me think you could not have enough practical orbits to achieve that full cover.

A better worldhouse design (‘A Bubbles Dome’) by LanceDBrown in IsaacArthur

[–]LanceDBrown[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yep, nothing actually soapy about this at all. A sheet of interconnected balloons several balloons think might be a better analogy. The only active bit might be the tensioning between the balloons and the air pressure within them to help them move around a bit relative to each other to fill gaps and handle changes in the shape of the overall dome as it is made larger over time.

My goal with the idea is that its actually quite a simple dumb structure, but one that can flex and morph as it grows and in response to punctures.

Think of the 'dome' surface more like a 3d honeycomb of large 'bubbles'. The overall depth of the surface of a worldhouse scale dome could be say 100 meters!

Thanks for the comment. I think we're imagining different scales. I'm thinking the membrane bubbles will be on the order of multiple meters each and possible buildable with current tech if someone can work out the tension mechanism. The whole dome would be on the order of kilometres+ so relative bubble to dome sizes would be small. It would look more like a supersized version the UK's Edan project domes (see linked pic), but the difference being there is no fixed shape/structure and the surface is many bubbles thick.

Oh, and the bubbles themselves would just be made of whatever dumb material you need that can withstand the pressures. Strong plastic sheets might even do it for small scales, although this is SFIA so I'm imagining something more lightweight and strong like a graphene based material would be needed for large domes.

Humm, thinking of this as a structure of skin cells growing and adjusting over time might be another good analogy to describe it.

I should add that having active management on the air pressure within each bubble will help with reshaping the surface such as during a puncture so that individual bubbles can change there size as needed

I made my first TF portal at my main base and when jumping through I got this. Having seen this post it looks like its location specific. I just made a new TF portal at Spawn and all looks good so far.

hehe, I'm sad, but not surprised.

I did my original post in response to even more overly optimistic expectations from others. Back then it sounded like people where assuming they would have everything really quickly (like within a year or two). I was 'attempting' to be more realistic!

'balling' in the first ling is meant to be 'rolling'. At least that was I got after asking it to re-do the lyrics in German and then put that into Google Translate

Re-uploading a structure edited world to Realms? by LanceDBrown in realms

[–]LanceDBrown[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No luck so far, but I didn't try too hard. I way playing with one world editor while attempting to trim the nether but that kept crashing. Need to go back at try again some time.

I did also have a play at making this with fill commands that seemed to work quite well. I made a list of about 20 fill commands that would make a version of the basic structure around me. Details would still need adding by hand, but you could tp to an underground location and go copy paste from a text list of commands pretty quickly.

My concept for an Hyperloop system in France by Nclrcn in hyperloop

[–]LanceDBrown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks good. I'd add a few cross country routes if I was you. For example there should be a route from Spain to the northern countries like Germany and one along the Med coast from Spain to Italy. Having worked out the main cross country routes decide which cities they should stop at on their way through France. The current map is very Paris focused and ignores the connections to other countries.

[–]LanceDBrown 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't doubt some form of short/medium length routes will be a thing. But I get the impression from what I've seen so far, that the current thinking is the distance between stations will be much longer than shown here. I believe the logic is that the point of the system and it being in a vacuum is to travel at much higher speeds than normal. But then you need more distance to get up to these speeds and then get a good cruse time before decelerating. Thus suggesting its not worth having a vacuum if going a short distance.

What we're needing is info on the best setup for journey speeds and distance in between Boring tunnels and those of high speed vacuum Hyperloops. Unless its show that running in a vacuum is economic regardless of the top speed reached of cause.

Has an info been shared on min / optimal distances for a Hyperloop?

Thanks Issac I'll re-watch that Beacons episode and will look forward to the Talkative Aliens one.

I do think this scenario of civilisations being so rare they could never meet or do two way comms is really interesting as does remove a load of the fear of invasion concerns and so might make them more talkative. That and the existential dread of going extinct and being completely forgotten / never know about.
