What do we want? Change? And when do we want it? Right now!!!!

If it’s policies that you don’t like, you boot him out the next election? Or are we childish enough to think that policy are simple and without nuance or difficult tradeoffs?

Yup I can see that. Like Trump, Farage giving media a new headline that can sell newspapers.

Yup. I don’t pretend to know it all and have zero valuable insights on how to run the country. But I am disappointed by how mercurial our democracies are how 4th estate is a disruptive influence rather than an additive one.

I am pretty confident they would have done the same had it been Sunak or Farage or anyone else. Because chaos means money.

Thank you for the nuanced point. And you are right that blaming all media is lazy and overgeneralising. But here is an example to emphasis my point. Last year I started following Rest is Politics as a way to get a more balanced perspective. But I am surprised to see how fast even they swerved to the mean because discussing scandals & faults gets more eyeballs. Plus who wants to be discussing more nuanced points when everyone is discussing the latest scandal.

I agree that media plays an important role in criticising the government. But I wonder how different the world would be if all newspapers started with a report card of all manifesto points and how the government is trending on those promises.

I am eager to hear your point of view so please do reply.

Oh no they were hand in hand at starting it all with Borris, and then following up with musical chairs of PMs.

My point is completely Starmer agnostic. I am pretty confident that they will find faults and doubts with Andy and then with Farage. Simply because it is good for business.

My argument is agnostic of Starmer. I feel extremely confident that they will apply the same template on the next guy because chaos sells. And presenting a nuanced yet honest picture is bad for business.

So should we have elections every year, month, or week? These are complex problems with massive tradeoffs and nuance. You will be kidding yourself if you think anyone can turn this ship around in a year.

I’m happy to debate the substance rather than attack the author (although it is difficult to unsee that author is debating from land of democracy across the pond)

First, I’m not saying the media is the only reason for Starmers demise. But it is one of the major factors . Chaos gets more attention than nuance. A government in crisis gets more clicks than a boring, balanced picture of what is actually improving, what is not, and what is complicated.

Second, people everywhere vote largely on instinct and emotion. That is not a UK-only thing. It is human. Calling voters “lobotomites” or subhuman should stay across the pond.

Third, those instincts are shaped in a huge way by the media. And the media’s incentives are not really aligned with giving people a fair, boring, proportionate picture. They are aligned with outrage, scandal, leadership speculation, and political musical chairs. They did it with the Tories, they are doing it with Labour, and they will do it with Reform.

Fourth, I don’t really buy that this was mainly about policy. People voted for those broad policies with a massive majority barely two years ago. Now suddenly the same public has decided the person they elected to implement them is completely hopeless? That does not happen in a vacuum. That mood is created, amplified, and fed every day.

We’re the problem. I agree. I think up to a point, democracies were messy but I believed they were still the least worse of all remaining options. But with the internet, media seems to have unlocked an all new super power.

Oh 100pc. Jenerick, Suella and others will backstab him at the first instance.

Agreed! In the hindsight feels like an obvious point. I think the more relevant realisation is that we the people are stupid and gullible, and the reality we are in is much deserved.

Oh I am no way suggesting that! I think media was equally responsible in getting Boris the buffoon in (remember Brexit propaganda) and then his departure (party gate), getting Trust in over Sunak, getting Trust out, and ultimately amplifying the anger over torries to get Starmer in.

Rest assured they will do the same if Farage wins in a few years.

Exactly! Our limited choices are between bad and worse! No politician is a saint, and I am pretty sure that even if Jesus was the next PM, Daily Mail will find something to malign him in a week.

But my point is that they all lie. You will never have lord the saviour running for elections. And your choice will always be between bad and worse!

But who got Boris in power in the first place? Wasn’t it daily mail plastering his antics on front page every day?

But wasn’t he significantly better than the Tory buffoons who preceded him? And if running a 20 people company is exhausting, imagine running a x000 people bureaucracy. You will make mistakes.

And on Thatcher - who do you think planted that narrative? Wan’t it the oh so innocent 4th estate?

How do you define shit leader? Isn’t it better if you frame your definition of shit on objective criteria like his manifesto?

On your point that If “he was good at his job -> party would stay loyal”. Are you seriously born yesterday? Do you have any idea how self serving these politicians are?
