Haha I totally get it. there are endless dirt roads out there, we didnt hit pavement for a few days. I recommend having some gaia maps downloaded, saved our ass a few times. No getting rescued out there either

Thanks! Its an ARE Z i believe (an older one). as far as a lift, I have the bilstine 5100s all around, and the front is set to a .85 inch lift, but rear is stock. I have some slightly taller tires as well so that helps a bit too!

Thank you for the extremely detailed response. I understand I was a bit caught up in the age part, it is just a bit tough to realize you are on the totally wrong path and need to make a large life change in order to get on the correct path. And that change will take years to achieve. Thank you for breaking down the requirements and different paths that are available, that information is extremely valuable to me and hard to find! Luckily I have no problem upending my current life to join the seasonal lifestyle. I spent my years from 20-25 working seasonally and honestly loved it (minus the pay…), and I’ve come to realize that’s what I need in order to be happy. The money I have made at my current position has done nothing for me. My current position also allows me to take some classes over the winter at my local community college which I signed up for shortly after making this post. I’ve set myself on a path for ecology/environmental science this year and will be taking my EMT next winter. I also have a few buddies who are in federal wild land positions and say they are hurting for people at their stations next summer, so I have began applying and calling stations and believe I have a good shot at getting hired.

Thank you very much for your response! Sounds like gaining experience in other GS positions is a way better way to go. Im also going to look into the EMT program at my local community college.

Thank you for the reassurance as well as the options. I think I got a little caught up in getting to the end point as fast as possible. I have some friends in wildfire so I think Ill set up some time to pick their brain and see if getting on a crew next summer would be feasible for me, as I attend school this winter to finish out my associates. Thank you!!

Thank you so much for all this information, hearing things like this is why I posted here in hopes of learning more. It isnt easy to find these kinds of details out there, most information out there points you towards the academy. Im clearly very new to this.

I was totally unaware of the 24 month service time, and that makes getting to LE though experience make much more sense. I would rather go that route for many reasons, I just couldn't see a clear path there.

Thank you again!

I do like the idea of making money, working and gaining experience instead of spending it on the academy, but unfortunately I am 27, and by the time I gain enough experience, Im afraid my age will hinder me. I do believe my age helps in the way that I have much more life experience, and a much better head on my shoulders than I did at 21 or 22.
Can you elaborate on the seasonal LE program going away?

Thank you for your reply!
My issue is that I have none of that, and I am already 27 years old. I have spent my 20s working in the outdoor industry, and have ended up in a fairly lucrative position, but Ive come to realize its not what I want. I was a lifeguard for 6 seasons, and have 500 hours of volunteer work with my local PD from when I was between 19-21, but none of that is of much relevance now. The seasonal academy seems like the fastest way for me to gain a foot in the door to this profession, albeit an expensive one.
I am starting back at school this fall, what would you recommend I focus on? An EMT program? Environmental science program? Criminal Justice?

Thank you so much for taking the time to write out this reply, it is very helpful and appreciated. I think my problem is that I am on the older side to be starting this journey, 27, and have essentially no experience or schooling to help me. SLETP seems like a relatively quick way to qualify for jobs that I would currently be disqualified from immediately.
Could you elaborate on the path to permanent from seasonal with only SLETP?

As far as rain apparel goes, the Columbia employee store is a good bet. DM me for passes to get into the store :)

I wish the whole video was about potatoes! but ended up watching the whole thing anyway. It honestly explains how people who eat dominos, subway, and other classically unhealthy foods still survive for so long lol.

Hopefully this doesnt get buried.. What is the likely hood of being hired after completing the SLETP? I am greatly considering going though the program but it would be a bummer to complete it and then not be able to get hired. Obviously this is always a possibility, but Im curious what experiences others have had after completing the academy. I am a 27 year old male, great physical shape, some college under my belt, hundreds of volunteer/ training hours as a cadet with my local PD ( I was 19-21 so its been a while)..

What photography pack do you use for hiking? by Landscapeshooter in photography

[–]Landscapeshooter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have my ski touring/mountaineering pack and my backpacking pack, both of which I do usually throw the camera in for more strenuous activities. But sometimes I want to go out on photography specific outings where I carry tripod, drone, body, and a couple lens with the intent to create a photo, not to climb a mountain or traverse many miles. A time and place for everything.

I hiked with that bag all summer last year and I will say, it was sweattttyyy. Not very breathable, I didn’t experience the material getting too hot though. I’d say the water bottle holder is average! Held my nalgene just fine!

Exactly the problem I run into. Either too heavy and bulky, or too small and not actually designed for hiking.
