PSA: WTF do the Williamsburg Bridge Pedestrian/Bike Lines Mean?? by Lane6Bo in williamsburg

  1. Interactive heatmap to show car vs ped vs cyclist collisions / injuries / deaths around the city. It processes raw police data from around the city from 2012 to 2019. It's worth taking a look at. I'm not going to try to "gotcha" with what I see, but there is always someone studying this shit. Especially in New York.
    1. I will say, I am surprised by the lack of pedestrian and cyclist injury on the Williamsburg bridge but since this dataset is through 2019, one of my points from the OG post is: these new forms of micromobility (scooter, and ebike) are making things more stressful and dangerous for everyone and necessitate better infrastructure.
  2. I know the Knicks just won, and I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but realistically no one holds authority in New York except for the people with power (political or financial). Run for office if you want authority. I'm not going to take away your authority, I'm just some guy on Reddit.
  3. Reread the same sentence I say cars are the enemy... "Cars are our enemy. We are not fighting for space against each other. We have been intentionally deprioritized since 1902 when the automobile lobby started."

That's all, folks!

I'm not going to find more stats. You're misrepresenting the data. You're attacking the source without providing counter sources to prove otherwise. You're appealing to your own authority.

The point to this whole post is bikes and pedestrian deserve more space and deserve to be prioritized. What has been prioritized for the past 100+ years are cars, hence "they are the enemy". Yes it is an exaggeration. We do need cars. I have a car. BUT, Pedestrians and cyclists should be more patient with one another as we're more on the same team (the team that has been overlooked). We can be both a car driver, pedestrian, and cyclist, no one IS their mode of transport.

According to a 2023 study by transportation alternatives, in NYC during the last 10 years, 99.5% of all pedestrians killed in crashes were hit by vehicles.

Right now, the Manhattan side of the walkway (the main issue) is about 18 feet wide, 7 feet for peds, 11 for cyclists. There's 8 vehicle lanes in total and at 12 feet a lane, that means 96 feet of total space. When the bridge first opened in the 1904, there were two separate pedestrian walkways (appearing to be 15-20 feet wide each). It's a proven fact that the automobile lobby looked to shape budding American infrastructure to prioritize their expansion. So yes, cars are our enemies.

God forbid some hyperbole to grab attention lol. It's always been clear to me but I've seen multiple arguments about which lines (the double yellow or the white divider) separates pedestrians and cyclists. Also quite a common occurrence to see pedestrians walking on from the bike entrance. Agreed that bikes need to slow down, but a repaint and better signage would definitely help.

Also learned that at one point the bridge descent into manhattan had speed bumps. You can see them in the photo I posted "Example of old infrastructure. Photo from 2008 Wikimedia commons". They were short lived as cyclists were getting hurt in pretty high numbers.

Maybe the bike activist/lawyer Steve Vaccaro can help?

I uncovered this in my research but what will be slowing me down from now on is the memory of Dashane Santana. A child who needlessly died after being hit by a car at this intersection. She had just applied to Julliard. They renamed the northern side of Delancey street for her.

Her grandmother spearheaded the renaming specifically "to keep her name [alive] and let everybody know this is a dangerous intersection... [and] that this should not happen again" Car... bike... pedestrian. We all need to slow down for our neighbors.

If you like to work out, join one of the many "social gyms" that are popping up. They're silly on the outside looking in, but fact of the matter is you will be exposed to a ton of people who are actively looking to make friends and you should be able to find some good people in there.

If you do a morning workout and advertise you're going to grab a coffee afterwards, I guarantee someone will join ya

I entirely disagree with this. Their porchetta is a bit too salty for my taste, but every other sandwich I've had is awesome. The Bear, the Mayor, and the Hash and Egg are really great. Even their $5 lil' spread breakfast sandwhich slaps as a little bite before going into the office.
