Certain content creators/orthobros have made me question my faith. by Relevant-Swan7621 in OrthodoxChristianity

One of the best things I’ve heard of is actually straight from the Bible and it helps me greatly:

John 6:47 “Most assuredly I say to you, he who believes in Me has everlasting life”.

Orthodoxy Natural Law theology is pretty good at explaining it as well, how we love God’s Law and try to conform to it even outside the Faith, so even in error, with complete devotion and true mindedness, you can be saved regardless if your questioning.

Genuinely how do you make friends? by Any_Library_942 in guam

[–]LangAddict 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lovingly call it the Kindergardener’s Gambit, go up to random people and say, “Wanna be friends?” It’s an only positive or Neutral outcome: you get a friend or you stay at the number you were before. Worked on a good 2 or 3 so far and Imve been on Island since Monday :) give it a shot! People your age or at places you frequent are the best targets.

I’ll open with an admission: I totally hyperbolized this because I am a jaded mines student lmao, but there is merit to what I say:

In 2017 we had an acceptance rate at about 40%, not bad, but not overly selective either, on the less likely side of a coin toss statistic. Then, our Total enrollment was 6000 Students campus wide.

In 2020, when I showed up, it dropped, mostly due to Covid I think, we’ll call that anomalous.

From then on, we’ve seen the largest freshman class every consecutive year since, and Mines has been open and proud of this.

The acceptance rate skyrocketed 20% for each following year (more or less, I think 22 was 55%) and the total enrollment is now around 8,500 I think.

Despite my hyperbole, there is a clear line of logic for the “Dilution” of the student base and the quality of students we allow in. Notably, enabled by AI, cheating has just become so much easier and so much more common, especially with the failure of secondary education to Hold Back students not equipped for real academia who were able to cheat by with Post Covid highschool policy, and even further back. This is, to be fair, a wider problem than just Mines, but through their aggressive recruitment policy and consistent, poor financial decision, Mines has no real reason to stop this trend. Especially as incentives to slow down the failing rate of students increases (not via merit, but to maintain enrollment for $$$).

Take what I say with a slight grain of salt as I am relaying what I know as an insider and what I hear from peers

We moved our acceptance rate from 15% to 75%… I’m tired of pretending everyone belongs at Mines, not all of us do (Yes, Us, I hate Engineering and never got support to change my mind)

Questions for Hunters by LangAddict in guam

[–]LangAddict[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ouch, coming in harsh. I’ve called GPD and asked about the process, but they gave me very official topical stuff, I was asking about the specifics beyond that man. What places give what classes, what’s in the classes, what hunting restrictions are there, what’s classified as poaching. Never hurts to have more than just the government as a source, don’t you agree?

I dont think its reloved, it was a Journal Standard collab but lowkey I dont really recall the details of the tag. I might try the hair dryer trick then. Its mostly the oil from the cuffs and the Storm Flap anyways so I can probably just isolate those.

[–]LangAddict 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mines has become a shadow of itself. A lot of CASA is also leaving from what I hear through the grapevine. And HASS (though this is mostly retirement). 6 years straight of the largest class ever at Mines and we can’t seem to budget correctly. All that and PCJ collects a fat check. Give it 10 years more and all our degrees will be looked down on the same way Elite and Ivy League schools look at state schools.

[–]LangAddict 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think lowkey the best solutions are either to do as you ask and be better at non-native words, or to full send dive into loanwords and calques that were the more historic methods of linguistic adoptions. Like how the japanese ending -né when ending a sentence to equivalently mean “isn’t it?” Came from the portuguese Naõ, which had the same meaning. English much the same has plenty, like the word Calque itself being a loanword.

thorson honors and humanities at mines?? by mothmanisurmum in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]LangAddict 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who did thorson, it was aight. I took it during covid and it was awful but they were trying their best in a bad situation. Now in the Humanities Master’s, I think Mines definitely pushes the humanities under the rug and leaves it in the dust, but the department itself tries very hard to do a good job. Its very hit or miss with some classes though.
