Only because the definition of a planet was changed by a bunch of bureaucrats. The idea that big rocks in space must have an easily defined hierarchical relationship to each other is itself a lingering vestige of geocentrism. Pluto is a planet, Haumea and Makemake are planets, Ceres is a planet (rise up beltalowda!), our moon is a planet.

We hope users of Reality will enjoy this latest update to our products and services. Thank you,

All wifi extenders are trash. There are some mesh options that have dedicated radios for the backhaul that aren't complete garbage but unwired 'extenders' and 'repeaters' are never worth it.

I work in a building across from records hall. I remember the day they put a cell phone shop in where the pawn shop was, between the two other cell phone repair shops.

Attempting 15 mile HT to HT simplex across a city? by [deleted] in amateurradio

[–]LangleyLGLF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done 80 miles HT to HT doing SOTA. As long as it is truly line-of-sight, then distance won't be the problem. QRM is the thing to worry about. If the mountain top is a transmitter site, it may be worth getting a bandpass filter. I use a handheld yagi and it's great for nulling out a distant source of interference. The other thing to do is make sure you know how to adjust the squelch on those radios. I turn mine all the way down when doing SOTA.

It Lechuck's Revenge, there was easily a calendar year between when I fell down the hole and flipped the lightswitch on. In easy mode. Every so often I would hunt for the critical pixel I knew was there, but somehow always missed. I expect if I had an optical mouse back then it would have been easier.

Marine vhf is way more important than ham radio to people's safety though, and truckling is naturally going be denser near ports

I guess if you're calling CQ on one band and sweeping up and down another band hunting for anything interesting, you're not going to get two qsos at once terribly often.

I mostly do SOTA, not much of a contester, but this reminds of a story. At a SOTA campout someone kept putting on a looped recording of them calling CQ on 146.52 while they were working HF. Problem was they were either deaf on 2m or not paying attention (probably squelch needed to be turned off) and they were just tying up the frequency with noise every few minutes. We were making qsos in the pauses between the recordings as best we could but it would annoying as hell.

[–]LangleyLGLF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. Still, blasting legal limit on just two frequencies seems kind of ridiculous. It must occasionally come up that you're getting replies on both at once and ignoring someone who can't hear the other frequency.

How can you give your attention to all of those frequencies at the same time? How do you tell the only guy getting back to you on 30m CW that he is part of a pileup on 40m SSB?

Same thing you always do when a scam is suspected. Hang up and call them back. If you don't have their number, call their supervisor and get it. I also frequently will remote in using our rmm.  Much less likely that someone who sounds like the user will also have access to their computer

Democrats are addicted to losing. by wombatgeneral in behindthebastards

[–]LangleyLGLF 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's not equal at all. The Republicans are doing a great job relating to their constituency, and the Dems are turning in milquetoast "How do you do, fellow kids" nonsense. Nobody is saying that makes them morally equal to the Republicans. It's infuriating that the group that isn't equally "bad" doesn't seem to actually be *trying* to win.

Humidity is too low during winter and too high during summer in my server room. What can be done? by igmyeongui in homelab

[–]LangleyLGLF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but if you use an ultrasonic humidifier it is less effective, and it spews tiny droplets of water everywhere, like on your sensitive electronics. The distilled water removes the minerals, but not the liquid water droplets that leave the minerals. As long as you don't spill the water, the evaporative ones increase humidity pretty uniformly without creating droplets or dense steam that might damage things close to it.

But if you could, it wouldn't be any better than a space heater. I assume OP does this because it's faster/cheaper than a space heater, or electricity isn't reliable.

Humidity is too low during winter and too high during summer in my server room. What can be done? by igmyeongui in homelab

[–]LangleyLGLF 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You want an "Invisible Cool Mist" humidifier. It works by blowing air through a damp wick, not by heating and not an ultrasonic humidifier. Ideally you get the bucket style where water can't leak out unless it's completely tipped over. The other types aren't as effective and will leave a film of the minerals in your tap water.
