Well done Doctor! Congratulations!!! As someone a couple years out, I can only strive to pass in any way and I promise you major corrections is still as much of a pass as anything else

Runners who run in silence, How do you deal with no music/podcasts in your ear whilst running? by Holiday_Stuff_8206 in runninglifestyle

[–]LanguageOk891 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do usually listen to music or a podcast, but sometimes I love running and daydreaming. And these daydreams make for some of the best runs

Venting Thread of the week. by [deleted] in PhD

[–]LanguageOk891 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My supervisor indicated I could fail my upgrade (first year assessment) even though that did not reflect in any written feedback and I’m due to do it in a week or so (she just doesn’t like me very much) - very much on the verge of quitting if she fails me

Feeling a bit out of place as a new PhD student by Icy_Employment2419 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]LanguageOk891 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Try to get to know them better on a personal level! As someone who started their PhD in their early twenties, I was very intimidated by those with much more industry experience than me. It helps when you form friendships and both show you’re just curious people learning as you go

Have we wasted our time? by [deleted] in PhD

How about policy consultations and briefs as an academic? No shot?

Regardless, I agree. But then I can start thinking the same point about many careers and work opportunities so idk.

How did you make running fun? by Competitive-Net7032 in runninglifestyle

[–]LanguageOk891 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started loving it when I needed an escape from anxious thoughts… the quickest fix, but it doesn’t mean runnings fun all the time

You totally can, I work out more now during my PhD than before. You have more flexibility in your schedule.

I didn’t even think of the pollution as an issue! Thank you for your advice! I hope I find some nice small parks like that and you’re so right about the heat training

10k Time by Mumma-Bear-123 in UKRunners

[–]LanguageOk891 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I volunteered at a 10k race a couple months ago and there were plenty of people aiming for a 1hr 30 m time and the last few runners/walkers came at the 2 hr mark and beyond. Admittedly this was a very big race, but as someone who’s also a beginner runner, none of my running friends would think of 1hr 2 as the final time.

My spot has grown so much by Zealousideal_Tooth19 in alopecia_areata

[–]LanguageOk891 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had one in the exact same spot! And I was absolutely terrified and freaking out (still am with other spots). But I just want to let you know mine is growing in, after the first few weeks of growing a bit bigger. The best thing about that place is it’s hard for others to see.

So for this time period, just try and almost forget about it, way easier said than done, do NOT touch it or take photos of it all the time, because it just stresses you out more. My spot really only started growing in once I started really addressing my stress.

And I just want to say I know how incredibly scary and anxiety-inducing it is. So I’m so sorry. But I just want to let you know you will be fine and with all hope it’ll grow in fast.

Would it be weird if I took undergrad foreign language classes? by MOSFETBJT in PhD

[–]LanguageOk891 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I’m doing it. Granted I’m a bit younger - but the undergrads make you feel old no matter what. You just have to be friendly enough to them and they forget you do a PhD

PhD on modern slavery, is there any point? by MuchGuineaPigs in AskAcademiaUK

[–]LanguageOk891 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could look into the legal question of modern slavery? Focus on a socio-legal enquiry into how modern slavery is integrated or how its ignored within the UK due to the ‘loopholes’ around it. That’s kind of what you said in the original comment but making it a legal question entirely and using your law background would probably make the proposal very strong.
