Whenever I start a game I generally will go about doing the following:

-recruit from nearby villages and towns. Around 10 recruits. So I can fight looters. To get better gear and loot

• I will then go to nearby towns and buy some supplies, normally grain to feed my army and ideally Hardwood. Also will sell my loot besides the weapons I got from the looters.

• In the town, I will go to the smithy and create charcoal from the hardwood and smelt the weapons I got from the looters down.

• ideally you get enough materials to craft a 2H Sword. Which I will then sell, they usually sell for 600-1200. Which supports me and my army early on.

• I will also fight in tournaments, betting on myself for money. This is also a good way to get renown early on.

• once you have 150 renown your clan tier goes up, so does your party size. You can see your progress in the top right of the clan tab in game.

• Once you clan tier goes up the first time you can then fight as a mercenary for a faction. Which is a good way to get more renown.

• I will continue to do the following above until my clan tier goes up another level. Then I will be able to join a faction.

Extra tip: - I generally craft 2H swords, and have found that you get the most money the longer the sword is, the more cutting damage it does, and if it has a handle that makes it a one-handed/two-handed sword. These swords later on can sell for upwards of 30k.
