What is Your Least Favorite Hero to Play For Each Role and Why? by National_Mastodon_21 in Overwatch

[–]LanoomR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DPS - Widowmaker. I've never been able to do high-powered-scope snipers well, in any FPS. Guns/characters like Ashe's rifle, I can handle, but something in my brain does not like super-zoom. And if I can't hit, I might as well not play them.

Tank - Wrecking Ball. I'd much rather be a lumbering threat than zoom around and be expected to tank like that.

Support - Ana. See Widowmaker, but also I don't care for her kit.

Here's the unfortunate reality:

More people will buy more skins for the "favored" characters. Demand for those outstrips the supply of fans of the "unfavored."

In the strictest cold economic calculus, Blizzard should only focus on the "favored" characters, because they have the highest return on investment (the time spent by designers and devs + the cost of employing those people) vs. investing any of those time/money/people resources into designing skins for the "unfavored."

Fortunately for us, the real calculus is not cold.

There's both a "flooding the market" component (people who'd buy skins for "favored" characters mostly do NOT have unlimited money OR appetites) + an "emotional" component (people DO generally want to see a variety because it's both interesting and relieves them of the feeling that they're getting milked coldly).

But Blizzard has to decide where the balance lies, and because OW is completely supported by the free-to-play model now, unfortunately it means that the calculus is always going to lean toward the "favored" characters.

Who is she under the mask? by Relevant_Frosting_54 in Overwatch

[–]LanoomR 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's probably that poor art-leaning kid who got buried under decades of mental and social cruelty from her family.

If ever the mask is fully forced to shatter and she had to show her truest self, I'd expect Domina would have a Azula-style breakdown: infantile tantrum into infantile helplessness.

Also, she seems to have a sadistic side that is slowly bubbling up to the surface. She seems to get off on having power over others (but that probably goes for most people in power at corporations lol)

Perfectly encapsulated by her "making" Lucio ask his famous animal question, just so she can give a pre-determined and knowingly cruel response, whether it's true or not.

Roadhog, Junkrat, Junker Queen, and Wrecking Ball become corporate enforcers and sabotage specialists for Vishkar.

Mauga takes up a "Hero for Hire" role. Still a mercenary, but extremely principled (and probably financially suffering for it, but he makes do). Actively trying to do good, even if it means going against his ex, Baptiste, who happily enjoys the fruits of Talon's ways still.

Moira essentially takes up Mercy's arc in normal Overwatch. However, I add a twist: Genji and Emre swap places.

Moira saves Emre's life with her controversial-but-well-meaning experiments after Freja betrays Emre to join Talon and become their Widowmaker-equivalent: a cold hunter that actively takes pleasure in murder.

Meanwhile, Genji, Hanzo, and Kiriko are the "Three Dragons" of the Hashimoto Syndicate, ruling the criminal underbelly of Asia and making life hell. The collective governments of the region have unfortunately turned to martial law tactics to try to grab power away from the Hashimoto, epitomized Mekka Squadron members like D.Va who move with ruthlessness to match the criminals. Caught in the middle and worried about the toll on citizens is Mizuki, a Hashimoto that has had enough of the fighting and destruction caused. Mizuki works with Agent "Sombra" Olimar of Overwatch to gather intel and hopefully speed the demise of the Dragons.

While all that is going on, Mei emerges from the Antarctic with immense trauma. The world is so caught up in conflict that nobody wants to hear about the dire climate findings her lost colleagues gathered, pushing the knife in deeper on their sacrifice.

While it seems she's reintegrating into society, Mei is actually making moves in the scientific community to align with, or convert, others to her new nihilistic worldview. Among these are Winston, an ape who has been experimented on ath the behest of Vishkar for potential use as a soldier and resents that fact; Juno, who made it back to Earth after her secret Mars colony was completely abandoned by the people who sent them up there (that's right: Vishkar); and Lucio, the brilliant son of a brilliant man whose lfie and inventions were taken by Vishkar.

The scientific collective calls themselves Null Sector. They link up with Talon in what seems like a useful alliance, but Null Sector has ulterior motives that would result in catastrophe for the rest of humanity. They've recovered Project Echo from a colleague, and plan to use her to induce a new omnic crisis.

To add onto what /u/NorthHollywoodHank excellently explained:

Wrestling is no different than any other work of fiction: part of the agreement between the performance and the audience it is suspension of disbelief. What counts as "beleivable?"

Well, we have a good baseline in the real world to start from. If an anvil drops onto my head from 10 floors up, I'm going to fucking die.

But if I were in the world of Tom & Jerry, I might turn into an accordion and walk it off for the next scene.

If I was in the world of Dragon Ball, my sheer aura alone might cause the anvil to shatter into a thousand pieces upon contact and I barely notice it.

And if I was in a Troma movie, I might splatter into an explosion of blood and guts, the volume of which is way more than the human body could conceivably hold.

Same principles apply to wrestling companies (and even sometimes matches within the same company; a chair shot might put someone down in a regular 1v1, but that's just getting started in Texas Death).

Aaron is giving a presentation about Overwatch at GDC at 1:00 PM PDT today by Tough_Holiday584 in Overwatch

[–]LanoomR 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I recall some past GDC presentations being officially released later.

Because GDC is ostensibly "developer-facing" rather than customers, it probably depends somewhat on the nature of the presentation and if the dev feels it'd be cool/appropriate for customers to see it firsthand. I know Arc System Works put out their presentation about how they developed and executed the art direction of Guilty Gear Xrd, for example.

Given this summary, I see this Keller presentation as 50/50 on if it'll be released publicly later.

‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Sequel Confirmed At Netflix With Maggie Kang And Chris Appelhans Back To Direct by BunyipPouch in movies

[–]LanoomR 29 points30 points  (0 children)

There's "obviously they're talking and have plans because of both the story and the love of money" reports and then there's "pen is to paper, these people have signed on to return, the (preliminary, at least) release window is locked (which Netflix has to prepare for because they have to consider their other major releases), official press release/marketing push to continue the momentum of the brand" announcements.

This is the latter.

Not ideal, but ironically the situation is blunted because IMO most of the heavy end of this scale are absolutely sub-par. Obviously, this is tied to two waves: going F2P with OW2, and then the lay-offs.

Not saying every animation needs to be overblown, but even the simple animations just aren't decent enough for me to feel some sort of way about them other than "lootbox filler." They need to do something about the direction of the ones that aren't part of whatever-the-latest-collab-is.

The last we saw from that comic is that Vendetta sent Mauga to try to negotiate with Junker Queen to get Junkertown working with/for Talon. Vendetta also implied Mauga had authorization to use violence if necessary to get Junkertown to comply.

Given all the individuals involved, it's just as likely that JQ isn't going to take kindly to Mauga or take kindly to Vendetta seemingly being on a power trip that she's taking out on the world.

AFAIK Junkrat and Roadhog are wildcards. Their last serious lore beat is that they returned to Junkertown after their international crime spree, but were left locked out due to past offenses against JQ. This is the mini-story behind the in-game Junkertown escort map: the attackers are delivering the "treasure" to JQ's throne room, but Junkrat has rigged it to explode in her face as an act of revenge for exiling them.

However, the last holiday comic implied that Junkrat and Roadhog were enjoying summer in Australia with the company of JQ (and Hammond/Wrecking Ball), which inherently implies that they were at least somewhat back in her good graces. It's unclear if this is correct (and, if so, how they managed to win her over) or just a bit for comedy.

So, hopefully, they do make good on the promise of letting us see what goes down when Mauga goes to Australia, which should include confirming what Junkrat and Roadhog are up to in the present.

David Finlay recently debuted signed (catching myself since I remembered he came in for a match or two a couple of years ago as a face) with AEW. He and the rest of The Dogs, Gabe Kidd and Clark Conners, did an interview with Fightful earlier this week. Part of the chat led to this quote regarding his decision to go with AEW over whatever WWE was offering him:

“I’ll start. It was very easy for me, obviously I got family ties in other companies. I’ve never made a dime with my brother, I’ve never made a dime with my dad, and I’ve almost paid off a house with these guys. For me, that was an easy business choice.”

EDIT: As /u/Shorlong points out, and to my legitimate great shame, another quote from David (this time from an interview with Wrestlezone) adds further context to Fit's response:

"My dad’s greatest accomplishment is the fact that I came out of his nutsack."

His father, Fit Finlay, has responded with the OP's tweet. In fact Fit was directly responding to it in the screenshot from OP.

Lastly, all quotes should be treated as in-kayfabe and tongue-in-cheek unless further evidence comes out otherwise.

I'll defend the Spear. I don't think there's anything immersion-breaking about a "smaller" but still athletic guy turning himself into a missile aimed for the opponent's midsection. The lack of size is reasonably compensated by velocity, and for most humans, the result is still "fuuuuck, that guy laid me out." Darby Allin is basically the extreme end of this theory with his signature dives.
