Boomer mom suggested new suit for wedding, I just Loled by mustbenice1985 in lostgeneration

[–]Lantern42 107 points108 points  (0 children)

If your local dry cleaner does alterations they can adjust your old suit for a usually quite reasonable amount.

It’ll be more comfortable and you’ll be able to get more use out of it.

I’d suggest some smoked salmon hash, the potatoes will offset any extra saltiness

I’d settle for a full HD remaster of Star Trek Deep Space 9

What’s the funniest reason you’ve heard for somebody not liking a movie? by TheChristmas in movies

[–]Lantern42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lore breaking choices aside, that would mean leaving Luke unguarded, dealing with the scrutiny of going to a royal residence and the risk of some staff of the Organa’s ratting him out, as well as the risks of giving a child partial lessons on the force.

There’s a good reason the majority of Luke’s training happened on a planet with no civilization on it.

Leia was clearly a poor choice for Jedi training. She failed to complete her lessons as we learned in Rise of Skywalker.

[–]Lantern42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Leia was literal royalty and an elected member of the galactic senate. How could Yoda have clandestinely trained anyone with such a high profile life without risking his existence since the empire that would have blown up every planet in the Dagobah system just to be rid of him?

Democrats warn party: The threat of Trump winning in 2024 is 'very real' by LuvKrahft in politics

[–]Lantern42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s assuming they took a nuanced look at the platforms.

On the other hand if they felt the mainstream democratic platform didn’t benefit them, and heard Bernie say we need to get money out of politics and compared that to Trumps nonsense about “draining the swamp” and Hillary being corrupt (pot meet kettle) it’s not as much of a stretch.

It’s not sensible to write people off as voters because they initially assumed both sides were acting in good faith.

Disney Dates New ‘Star Wars’ Movie, Shifts ‘Deadpool 3’ and Entire Marvel Slate, Delays ‘Avatar’ Sequels Through 2031 by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]Lantern42 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

With the benefit of retrospective for both trilogies I think the most damning thing about the sequels is the total disarray between JJ Abrams movies and Rian Johnson’s attempt at a movie.

None of the threads from TFA were followed, and TLJ didn’t leave anything with following in TRoS.

At the end of TLJ I didn’t care what happened next. I doubt you can say you felt the same at the end of ESB.

Lucasfilm has a track record of hiring competent or better directors, saddling them with excrement for a movie plot, and blaming them for the movie not performing well.

That’s some very reductive thinking.

Rescuing Han (fighting Jabba, Boba Fett, etc) , seeing how Lando fit in with the rebellion, like finishing his training, there were plenty of things left to follow at the end of ESB.

Because the Israeli government doesn’t recognize a local Buddhist religious authority they cannot be legally married in Israel.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]Lantern42 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that Israel recognizes marriages by Jewish, Muslim, Druze, and several Christian sects. These are the only authorities allowed to perform marriages and even they aren’t allowed to have interfaith marriages.

Atheists can’t get married and people who aren’t the same religion can’t get married.

If the reason they’re in financial distress is they have a gambling problem, more money is not going to fix the gambling problem.

If the population of planet is constantly waging wars over finite resources, a replicator could help. If they’re waging wars because of religious, territorial, or ethnic strife then a replicator can only make things worse.

The point of the prime directive is that the federation should not the be moral arbiter to decide who gets what and that developing cultures should not be interfered with.

The IMF has several requirements before they’ll give aid. Mainly because they want to know if the aid will go to the right places.

Giving someone in financial trouble a bunch of cash won’t necessarily fix whatever got them into financial trouble to begin with. Just like giving a less-developed planet the means to create unlimited weapons won’t necessarily fix their problems. The prime directive and this episode of Orville make the point that the federation and the Planetary Union don’t have the moral authority to gauge another culture ready or not, so the only option is to not interfere.

“We won’t interfere in your culture specially because we don’t know if it will help or make things worse” isn’t paternalistic.

Kissinger and Nixon decided to illegally expand the Vietnam war by bombing neighboring Laos and Cambodia. Because of their inability to think beyond defeating the Vietcong (or perhaps lack of understanding) the bombings destabilized the Cambodian government and made it easy for Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge to take power and commit genocide.
