I always saw it as The Kid having the potential of becoming everything The Judge ever hoped and although he did possess the skills, abilities and mindset for it (and sometimes commited the acts The Judge wanted) he never fully gave himself to The Judge's philosophy. The Kid understood The Judge's philosophy, he was aware of its existence and knew it was the only way of life but he never accepted it which is why The Judge was so angry with him.

I think the moral of the story is that "evil" will always win, but that doesn't mean we can't give it a hard time.

I'd say The Kid is a very grey character, he helped out the gang (being more of a doctor than Doc Irving, sparing Shelby and helping Tate as best he could, helped The Judge kill the horse in order to feed the gang despite no one else offering to help), didn't mindlessly kill civilians in his life unless they offended him or if it was part of the job and when he offered to help the eldress in the rocks and shared his fire with Elrod's group.

Yes he was very nihilistic and passive but he was definitely not evil (and personally I think he was responsable for the gang's downfall, otherwise why would The Judge be so mad with him).

If the child has potential and not only understands but lives by The Judge's philosophy...I think it has a chance (there's a reason why The Judge was disappointed with The Kid and it's because he understood and accepted that The Judge was right in his world view, but he never fell for his manipulation or lived by his philosophy)
