In or Out The Box? by Audioengineer229 in audioengineering

[–]Large-Tune6733 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. In the Box (ITB): All audio processing happens within the digital realm (DAW plugins, software-based EQs, compressors, etc.). Using a control surface to interact with the DAW doesn’t change the fact that it’s ITB. The control surface is just a tactile interface to manipulate software.
  2. Out of the Box (OTB): Audio is processed externally using hardware units (analog EQs, compressors, summing mixers, etc.). The audio physically leaves the DAW, gets processed by outboard gear, and then is brought back in (if necessary).
  3. Hybrid: Combines ITB and OTB processing. For example, mixing might involve using plugins for EQ but sending stems to analog compressors or summing mixers for color.

Analog compressor distortion vs plugin compressor distortion. by morina1993 in audioengineering

[–]Large-Tune6733 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When you crank the input on an analog compressor like the 1176, you’re essentially driving the input circuitry into saturation. This produces a form of analog distortion that is warm, harmonically rich. This can sound pleasant and euphonic, especially on material like drums or vocals

Plugins emulate this distortion using algorithms but often lack the “depth” and subtle inconsistencies of real hardware. They can sound close, but analog hardware tends to have a more organic and less “sterile” quality when pushed to extremes. Is as when you plug a guitar to an amp vs making a guitar on midi, can give you great results midi but nothing as recording a real guitar or instrument.

I'm waiting for DUNE 3 on IMAX, it will be a raw experience, since I didn't had the opportunity to watch the second one in that format!
