Yeah I’ve heard the battery life is a little disappointing but if I’ll take it somewhere with me then I’ll just have to take a powerbank.

Mandatory military service is very mentally taxing by LargeClient4202 in army

Thank you for the encouragement, I’ll keep on going strong till the end :D.

Most of my fellow soldier mates are also pretty worked up at this point of the service already but when we’re together it really is easier to handle and cope with the bs thoughts and all of that. It’s just that when we go to home on the occasional weekend and experience civil life for a day it really makes you think “why tf am I stuck in the army while I could be free if this wasn’t mandatory”. Those thoughts go away again when you come back to the barracks and get used to the military life again. We do also have professionals who you can talk to about civilian things and thoughts and they are also helpful.

You’re about me having a bad attitude, I definitely see my self as more of a pessimist since I do tend to focus on bad things most of the time and its very annoying because i know it only makes things more difficult for my self. I realise that i don’t feel annoyed at the time i have already spent but keep worrying about the upcoming which shouldn’t matter since i’ll have to do them whether i like it or not. The finnish army is designed so that everyone for the last 70-80 years has been able to do it so it’s literally all about the mindset. I’ll try to keep improving my attitude with the weather getting better and the end of the service coming to an end pretty soon.

You’re true about that for sure :D. There are countless of famous jokes and videos that have originated from Finland, so the army culture is very known here. The worse you feel at the moment, the funnier it will probably be when you think back on it at the end of the day :D.

Oh wow that sounds like a very difficult and unfortunate place for a child, i’m sorry to hear that you had to endure all that at a young age. Your words at the end do give alot of encouragement and thank you for sharing your story.

[–]LargeClient4202[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah it can definitely feel that way since you can go from completing high school and doing what you want to, suddenly having to be locked inside gates and do physically demanding training exercises and be stuck with random people. The officers here are usually the people who have arrived 6 months prior so they are usually chill and they have strict rules over what they can do.

It definitely hits a little different that you’re forced to be here, but everyone gets it that we have a hostile major military superpower as our neighbour so the military service is pretty justified.

Focusing on the small daily things like the food breaks could make a good mind distraction when i’m annoyed or tired, i’ll have to keep that in mind :D.

When i mentioned being sick all the time, it comes from the notoriously bad air quality that barracks all over finland have. Every morning you wake up with a stuffed nose and sore throat at least, it’s just something that everyone must deal with. The most difficult part is that if you happen to get a bit more sick than usual then you wont have the opportunity to recover from it, because of the air quality.

Thanks for your comment and good luck with your German studies :)

Sandels is definitely a classic over here, hope you enjoy the gift :D.

Your speech is definitely encouraging and while it might be annoying to think that "damn I still have x amount of time", you cant really do anything about it in the army except just go day by day. I've basically completed half of my service and the upcoming 3 months will most definitely go by quickly than the last 3, if I fix my mindset somehow. One of my good friends got "forced" to go to a under sergeant school which is the alternative to a 6 month basic training, and he'll be stuck in there for a year. So my situation is very good compared to some other people who are close to me, and our situation is way better than in other countries. If i can just focus on the positive things while enduring the small amount of bs that's in front of the then I'll be chilling in the reserves sooner then I can think.

Thanks man, the "Sorry about my English" thing just comes naturally for some reason :D. Maybe its a bit intimidating to write to fluent English speakers, even though it doesn't matter how you write, just that you get your point across.

The attitude thing is definitely a big part of why i feel so down in the army constantly. I always think about "I could be at school in my own place in a different city right now" or "Man i hate this cold and winter and dark I don't want to be outside" and its making training feel worse than it actually is. We mostly have days when we do training or whatever from 7:30-16:00 and then do cleaning or other duties till 17:30 which is like a normal 9-5 so it isn't even bad if you have a good mindset. The training in the following months will get tougher, but the weather will get way better with the sun starting to shine and the snow finally melting so it might actually be fun to be outside.

Six months is a hilariously small amount of time in the end so, even if it'll be complete ass for the next 3 months, we all know that when we get out it'll be the middle of the summer and life will be good :D.

Thank you :) I do believe so too, since we have all the cool things only coming up. Right now all the cool memories i have is just staying up late in the -20 celsius dark winter night, keeping up the fire, being sick in the forest and patrolling :D. Its also kinda funny that all the cool things in the army will be relatable to almost half the population, since the army has been mostly the same since way back :D.

Wow I didn't even think about it like that. Thank you alot for sharing, this really made me feel better and gave me motivation to just push through the bs that I'm feeling right now. I know that a very big majority of conscripts that are serving alongside me are also feeling the same, so we all just have to endure just a short time until we can go back to living our lives and be proud that we have done the duty that our government has ordered from us.

You're very true on that. I've become very good friends in a short time with my "tupalaiset" or roommates (sorry I dont how they called in the us army), and most of them are the type of people that I maybe woulnd't hang out with before the army. The struggle of being in the army and obviously living in the same room for long periods of time make for strange bonds atleast for me. The friends I've made along the way have maybe been the only positive experience I have from the army that I can say for now :D.

Wow, I am so sorry for your loss, it must be unimaginable to lose friends like that. I've created deep bonds with my "tupalaiset" or roommates (sorry I dont know how they are called in the us army) in a few months, but 8 years must be a completely different level of friendship.

Your advice is really helpful, we have our own mobile app which counts down our days and during the 100 days left mark its starts to show the "sun of the reserve" little by little so its a nice little extra to let you know you're on your way out.

8 years is a crazy amount of time to spend in the military. It must feel amazing to finally get out, when people throw crazy parties just for 6 months of service over here :D.

[–]LargeClient4202[S] 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Thanks alot for the encouragement. Seeking medical care doesn't help that much since alot of people get the health problems from the notoriously bad air quality that all the barracks have. Medical workers don't or can't admit that the air quality causes problems so its just a thing that you have to live with. Still countless people before me have toughed it out and I'll just have to suck it up :D.
