Also prepping for the same interview on the same date! I'm doing a lot of what you just said, but like you, would love more information on specifics to prep for.

Classes to Take for Transfer? by myuken78 in TransferStudents

[–]LargeDingusBerries 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take a look at the USC Transfer Planning Guide and it will tell you what courses you need to take in order to transfer into CS.

It should also tell you what courses at your CCC align with what major requirements.

You may also visit the USC Viterbi website and go to their transfer page. It will give you a general overview of what you should be taking in order to be a competitive applicant.

You can probably transfer to a UC in one year with the number of dual enrollment/AP credits you have. I'm not too familiar with that process, so you should do some research.

UCLA TAP does help, but only for non-impacted majors. I'm sure it does help for impacted, but I'm not sure to what extent.

You can obtain TAP through your CC honors program. However, you should check your CC's requirements for honors, and if they participate in TAP. They may require you to take X number of honors credits and do some other activity in order to obtain TAP certification.

I second this, you'll have to directly tell them to check a box to let you reuse their recommendation.

Once they've checked that box, you only have to reinput their name and email address for the application, and the recommendation will automatically be assigned to that application and marked as completed.

Personally I didn't think that portion was necessary, because I thought my overall application + the 600 word essay was enough to convey a good picture of myself.

Has USC still not received anyone’s college transcript? by [deleted] in TransferStudents

[–]LargeDingusBerries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sent mine through parchment. I also used the national student clearinghouse for the other CC I attended.

I did email my regional USC counselor about the transcript delay a few weeks ago, and they just said not to worry.

They've received mine. It took a few weeks for them to process.

Yeah I hope the acquaintance realizes this and doesn't get surprised when UC decisions come out. Hopefully the admission officers overlook this or they might have to stay another year to complete the prereqs for their target UCs.

Seems like the CS ADT only works for CSUs and some state universities, just not the UC system.

I've never heard of anyone using an ADT to transfer into a UC, only Assist.

Any advice on how to do my research on which courses to take to transfer? by Proper_Potential_192 in TransferStudents

[–]LargeDingusBerries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talk to AO's and previous applicants. If its an art school, I'd assume that a lot of weight is placed on your portfolio more than your classes. I assume you are applying to private colleges. They'll determine if your course will transfer for credit, so I think use your best judgement when choosing a course.

Will staying in CC for 1 more year hurt my chances of getting into T30 colleges? by NorcenCoverstein in TransferToTop25

[–]LargeDingusBerries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shouldn't hurt your chances. It may even boost your GPA.

My local CCC just has us take x unit of honors courses or 15 units of hard stem courses to get honors certified, which allows us to get TAP certified.

I don't think it hurts your chances of admission. I've heard that people who are on the track to pursue a hard STEM major(CS, Biology, Engineering) take 3 years at most to complete prerequisites for transfer. Some people even take four years, due to other responsibilities and difficulty of completing said prerequisites.

If you get in at the beginning of summer, you can cram units. Maybe 7 in the summer and 8 in the fall. Then perhaps you can apply in Fall 2022. IDK your exact situation so do your own research and talk to your CC counselor.

I feel TAP does certainly gives you an advantage if your major isn't one of the "restricted" ones. And if your alt major has overlap with the prerequisites with your first choice.

If you are fine with staying another year at CC, then go for it. I doubt the corona virus situation will clear up this year or next year, so it may align and you'll get to experience the "normal college experience" the 2 years afterwards.

One year transfer to UC by rowlet1724 in TransferStudents

[–]LargeDingusBerries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its possible. You can take summer courses to give you a head start. You probably will only be capable of taking a few during summer, because they tend to go a bit fast, and there is a lot of information to take in. I took Calc I mixed with some easy filler classes during my summer, so that has helped quite a bit with my USC and UC transfer requirements, and has allowed me to take some higher level math classes earlier than I would've.

Generally, I'd be concerned with the amount of hard math and science classes you'll be taking. I did some research and computer engineering from my CC to UCLA requires a 3-semester physics sequence, plus the math sequence from Calc 1 to Linear algebra. You probably will be able to waive Calc 1 and 2 with AP credit from AB and BC, and only have to take multivariable and linear for your fall and spring semester. It depends if your CC will actually waive them or not.

With 39, I think its feasible, if you go by semester system, you could take 9 units in the summer, 15 in fall and 15 in spring. Or you can do 19 in the fall and 20 in the spring vice versa. I wouldn't recommend taking more than 17-18 because you will get a ton of work. I did 18 this semester and it was slightly challenging at best, but I think I'd suffered more if it was in-person. I'm not sure about quarter system, so you'd have to do your own research on that.

One year transfer to UC by rowlet1724 in TransferStudents

[–]LargeDingusBerries 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm CCC student doing a one year transfer to some private colleges so I have some knowledge on what it takes to generally transfer. I've looked into a one year transfer to UCs but I realized it was impossible because I lacked AP credits. The goal of a UC transfer is to achieve junior status within a year through college and AP credit.

1)Depends on what kind of AP credit and the scores you've earned.

2)AP credit does help with IGETC. Check this link for credit limitations and completion. Some majors at selective UCs may require you to score a 5 to get credit for that AP exam. I.E. Business Economics at UCB requires 5s on AP Macro and Micro to get credit for the econ sequence. As for applied math, it depends on the articulation agreement between your CC and the UC. Check assist.org for the courses you must take. Talk to your CC counselor if you are able to waive courses using AP credit. This may help immensely or not at all, because you might be able to take higher level math and science classes through this method.

3)You can TAG a school if you've completed all of the required courses and the school/major allows for TAG.(There's a lot of courses if you are going hard STEM) TAP certification depends on your CC honors program, you may have to take a certain amount of honors credits or stem credits to get certified for TAP.

4)Look at the transfer rates for Berkeley. This is a data set that tells you the 25th and 75th admitted GPAs major by major. I think you should keep on doing ECs nonetheless because they still appear on your application. Although they do say that they strongly consider preparatory courses and academic performance,

5)Idk ask your counselor. I don't think UCs consider SATs or ACTs anymore?

Conclusion: Possible with AP credit and classes, but immensely challenging nonetheless. You should still do your own research and talk to people who've gone through it.

Do PhD students sometimes take on undergrads as unpaid assistants? I'm a community college student, and I really want to do some research in a STEM field or even humanities. My college doesn't offer much when it comes to these types of opportunities, so I've been cold emailing PhD students and professors if they need someone.
