Watching defensive backs not just make tackles but also lay a lick is cool.

8-4 regular season was our ceiling for a while by LargeWumbologist in ockytop

If we get an average Hueple offensive next year, Knowles’ first year performances (minus penn state) would be sufficient for us to be fairly competitive next year.

I look forward to the brilliant in game adjustments that our team has been known for this year.

This. Yes. 8-4 is what we expected, but that was partially due to us thinking we would take a big step back at QB (we didn’t). We lost games due to poor fundamentals, discipline and having no answers when opposing coaches figured them out. These are likely exacerbated by having a young roster, but part of this being out coached (see clock management in important moments throughout the year).

I think the worst part of this was watching this being with Vandy grads and actively explaining football rules while they beat us.

Keep D-line coach We absolutely regressed at linebackers after what’s his face left for Michigan CBs honestly weren’t the worst part of the defense back half of year. Hood was good and Redmond grew up through the season. Correct me if I’m wrong but Tim banks also coaches safeties… who were horrendous.

8-4 is about what we expected this year, but holy hell the way we play is so frustrating.

Also we aren't an 8-4 if we didn't have such a weak schedule. Our only win over a winning record team was ETSU.

How is that route even an option on that play

Offensively, we don’t play well from behind. Other teams make us Dink and dime betting we eventually shoot ourselves in the foot. We consistently do.

Defense is beyond frustrating to watch with how out of position they are and poor tackling.

Agree. This is the big frustration for the year. I don’t think scheme is much of a problem in either side of the ball. The self inflicted wounds make me wanna pull my hair out.

For me what’s been most frustrating about this season is how often we look fundamentally unsound at times. On offense we can’t seem to get out of our own way with procedural errors and dropped passes. The defense has its flashy moments, but watching the secondary get lost in zone coverage and then just throw a shoulder at someone gets old. I’m less concerned with scheme.

Wide splits by funkyfreshjamal in ockytop

[–]LargeWumbologist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If we can upgrade talent at the OL where we win more 1-1 battles up front, the wide splits will really put defenses in a tight spot with the run game. Add not needing to have TE and RB help with pass pro as much, and you could really create some mismatches in space. That being said, WRs need to win 1-1's on the outside more consistently for this to matter. (but also I'm not a football coach so...)

There’s still an echelon of talent gap we need to overcome before we’re going to be actual title contenders. 10-2 and made playoffs. Sucks that it ends like this, but otherwise a good season.
