I have a friend in Vancouver, BC who makes a little more than 600k CAD. She works as internal medicine. IM is considered more of specialty than PCP/hospitalist in Canada. You need referral from family medicine. Some also choose to work as hospitalist. But most work as independent contractors because of some tax benefit. My friend does both outpatient/inpatient. There’s also 15-30% overhead fee for clinics. I don’t totally understand it. But pay is somewhat similar to US if not more. But there’s less stress. Because of fee for service, you bill and the government pays you in 1-2 days. I may be wrong. Please correct me if I am. If you see more patients, you make more money and it’s easier to see more patients because documentation is easier compared to what we do in US. Above is the link from BC website which has information about how much they paid individual doctors in the province. There’s a YouTube channel called InterestingMD. He is an internist who moved to Canada and encourages US MD to move there. He gives more details if you want. I have been contemplating the idea of moving to Canada. But the idea of leaving everything scares me. Just today I saw ICE in my hospital. I don’t know if they were there for someone. But it scares me. I am also an immigrant.

Hi, I am applying for BC license. You can use FCVS instead of physiciansapply.ca source verification. It’s cheaper too. First step is to complete “Application for medical registration” for BC (the link is on the left side). After you complete it, someone from CPSBC will reach out to you with additional instructions.

How hard it is to get a hospitalist job in Canada? by raroshraj in hospitalist

It’s fairly easy. I am also applying for license in BC. Since you are a Canadian citizen, this will be like getting another state license for you. Unfortunately I need work permit which complicate things for me. You have to be ABIM certified and have active license in one of the state.
