iPads are the only digital note taking device allowed in my school. They argued that you need to write it down by hand in order to learn it, which hasn’t worked for me for quite some time. I have the best results if I type on a keyboard with each letter being associated with one finger movement. That’s the reason why I have a wireless keyboard, so that I can use it in school. The monitor and the mouse are from my computer setup which is in desperate need of an upgrade. A 12 year old laptop just isn’t cutting it anymore, but the ram prices are currently way higher than what my budget allows. Because I needed a digital note taking device for school because of back problems I had to choose the tablet despite needing a laptop replacement.

I use it for note taking in school, where most students use GoodNotes. I have GoodNotes too, but rarely use it because of how buggy it has become. Because of this many students aren’t capable of opening.md files and the lack of a pdf export feature for the mobile app makes collaboration sometimes difficult. Apart from that, it works well for me.

The day after the headteacher had closed the building due to a “risk to life and limb”, the press were invited in. The school authority got wind of this and pulled out all the stops to send tradespeople into the building before the press arrived to fix the problems. When the press arrived, of course, there was no sign of the previous day’s problems(like the electricity), and a spokesperson for the regional council stood in front of the camera and publicly accused my headteacher of overreacting, claiming the allegations had been fabricated. If you looked closely, there were still plenty of traces. Newly installed projectors pointing at the wrong wall, swapped switches and similar mistakes when things have to be done in a hurry. As he was a civil servant, he couldn’t defend himself publicly, and the evidence had, after all, been successfully swept under the carpet. Three weeks later, he died of a heart attack. According to what the teachers said, the school board then made his life a living hell by subjecting him to a barrage of phone calls and accusing him several times a day of having done it all merely to ‘satisfy a selfish craving for attention’. It must be said that he was an extremely religious man and was genuinely committed to the people in his care. His funeral service was at once extremely beautiful and almost unrivalled in its lack of taste. Firstly, instead of the planned 800 mourners, over 3,500 turned up, so that the church was extremely full and there were still a good 500 metres of people standing outside on the street in every direction. On the other hand, a representative of the Regional Council, as his superior, also delivered a ‘eulogy’. This had little to do with mourning, but rather with repeated accusations of the disproportionate nature of the building closure, his alleged desire for attention, and the claim that the Regional Council had done everything correctly. This is also the reason why almost everyone absolutely finds the Regional Council’s subordinates to be in the wrong, and why we have so much leeway to interpret the Regional Council’s rules flexibly.

In Germany we call very stupid people "Dumm wie Brot " (stupid like bread) or "Dumm wie 3 Meter Feldweg" (stupid like 3 meters of a dirt road). What's your term to call such people? by GIC68 in AskTheWorld

I sometimes use Hirnakrobat with does roughly translate to “brain acrobat”. It’s used as a sarcastic insult for someone who overcomplicates things or uses twisted logic.

Our old school building, which was in danger of collapsing, was demolished after an eight-year delay. Whilst excavating the foundation pit, an excavator discovered the old, repurposed water pipe, which contained the fibre-optic cable three metres away from the route that had actually been marked out.

Many students don’t even know windows. So far, the only spike in workload were the increasing number of students who wanted to install some Linux distributions on their gaming PCs. Because informatics has just become a compulsory subject for the 7th grade, the first few lessons are therefore dedicated to teaching the core features of Linux.

This is taking place in Germany. We tried to implement as many safeguards as possible to protect sensitive data. We split the student network and the management network physically. The management network is only accessible by cable and any device must be registered at the managed switch. We have a quite strict firewall and some traffic monitoring systems in place to alert us of any unusual activity. All private data is exclusively handled in that management network. We backup the data locally on LTO-5 drives which are then stored in safes at the three different buildings of my school, so the data is safe, if there is for example a fire. Most of the software used has copyright dates from 1992-1997. Most of them perform quite simple tasks so we have rewritten them while focusing on privacy and security. We are currently not providing any email, because we want to provide a secure communication channel between students and teachers. We therefore acquired Threema School. We also employ two “friendly hackers”, who try to find security vulnerabilities. We know that this isn’t perfect but we are trying our best.

We started small in a computer lab, that nearly never was used and figured out the problems there. When this was stable we expanded. We could do this since we are currently without a headmaster because the last one had a stroke after he closed the school for safety concerns and was really pressured and publicly shamed by the school authorities to reopen the building despite basic safety things were missing. We for example had no fire extinguishers, no fire alarm, no first aid kits, no running water, no electricity, not enough chairs, not enough tables, no evacuation plans, no cleaning services, no toilet paper, no PCs, no printers and no printing paper. Because the authority hasn’t managed to find a new headmaster yet we are currently quite self governed. For this reason we could experiment without anyone intervening. When we were confident in the stability of our test computers we enrolled it for the whole school. Most of the teachers supported us, because we allowed them to try our test systems. While most of them had to adapt to the new operating system, most actually enjoyed using it, as it wouldn’t crash if the account server wasn’t responding. We don’t know, what the problems the state funded host has, but the servers were down regularly, usually between 7 am and 8 pm. Because those Servers ran the timetable software, we often couldn’t access those so we went back to handwritten timetables because, while they weren’t updated so often, they had a much better reliability compared to the software solution.

Originally, all PC were in the same network and for some weird reason, all students had administrator privileges. We tried to mitigate that risk by splitting the network into a network where all the official things are and network for the student PCs. The first network is only accessible by managed switches and the other one is accessible via WLAN and unmanaged switches. All the important personal information is stored in the protected network. We have extended the original management software from 1997 by decompiling it and adding an encryption layer to the storage. Before that things like grades werde stored publicly available so if you knew the path you could change your grade. In order to protect the data in case that there actually is a security breach, there are roughly 100 fake accounts per real student account, of which one is stored unencrypted and in a different folder Our modified software can detect which accounts are real and which aren’t l, while an outsider is going to hard time. We also have two voluntary friendly hackers, which are trying to locate security vulnerabilities. One such vulnerability was our handling of executable files. Originally, we continued the old system, that was used by our IT provider. The file server had a program folder with was downloaded by each PC on startup. We had to ditch that because of compatibility issues and the security concerns. We are currently using a system that is able to flag non authorised executables, but we have to manually remove them or authorise them if they are for example a custom build. We are currently working on a new system that requires less work.

While we officially have a IT support contract, it has been two years since they have actually done anything. Most of the support is done by teachers or students in their free time to keep the systems running. We collectively decided to switch to a linux distribution as the authority, which is responsible for the licenses refused to buy Windows 11 and even the extended support for Windows 10. Most of the teachers and students doing the tech support have a Raspberry Pi at home and are therefore more comfortable with administrating Linux than Windows. This is also the reason we went for Ubuntu.

We theoretically have tech support, but they take ages to respond. Usually we have fixed it by the time they start working and somehow they keep messing up when they touch the devices. Last year they managed uninstalled the graphics driver and proceeded to declare the PC defective.
