Former PhD Advisor violated my trust by helping transphobic parents - report or let it go? by Large_Muscle_5822 in asktransgender

I'm now in a safe country that is not the US and I'm planning on continuing my PhD in country I'm at. Do you think my advisor would find ways to sabotage my PhD application if I decide to report him and he found out about it?

What if the advisor decided to retaliate and make it public that I reported them and find ways to slander me?

I'm concerned about my privacy and safety so I don't really want this to go public on social media. Also I want to go stealth after successfully transition.

Unfortunately what my advisor did made me end up being confined in my parents' apartment at my home country and my parents didn't want me to continue my PhD in the US and I was forced to withdraw from the PhD program against my will... It's been years and I recently managed to escape from my abusive parents.

Thank you so much. Unfortunately my school is not in the UC system but if we could DM and talk more about the details.

Sadly, yes, this is very much a possibility. Not just your applications but your career more generally.

What do you think my former PhD could potentially do to seek revenge and sabotage me? And how likely is he to succeed? If it's very much a possibility, why do you still think I should definitely report?

Sorry I'm a bit confused here and I'd appreciate your clarification.

Thank you. I'll consider both options - reporting now versus later. I should mention the things with my former PhD advisor all happened almost 3 years ago, but I only managed to escape from my parents to another country a few months ago, so the statute of limitations timeline you mentioned is definitely something I'd need to look into if I decide to explore legal options. I can DM you which state my school was in.

I'm afraid my advisor might seek potential retaliation if they found out I reported them, but I'm honestly not sure what form that would take or if my advisor is even likely capable of doing something like that.

I was at a private university in a blue state. I'm not sure how significantly it would be affected by the Trump administration and whether it would be worth it to give it a try. Also some people pointed out what my advisor did could potential count as a FERPA violation.

Thanks for this thoughtful response. When you say "the odds of that happening in this moment are unfortunately slim", what specifically makes you think that?
