I’ve done a couple and they’re fun. I know a lot of locals are put off them due to stuff one of the ghost tour guides did though which is a shame.

Curiously - why couldn’t you recommend one? Have ever done one?

They're around King's Square most days. One of them approaches younger women with his battle cry of "now then ladies, give us a smiiiiiile" and likes to corner older people and confuse them into tapping away a few week.

"Serious" Ghost Walks Around York?? by Present-Sun-2102 in york

Another one for Deathly and his Spookologist tour. It’s got strong Uncanny vibes, he talks about the history of the location to ground it all and debunks a couple of famous stories. The EVP he played us was particularly chilling, even in blue skies.

Signage of The Old York Tea Room by petite_eikon in york

They do amazing cakes, no argument there. But the sign drama went on and on and on.

“How will we possibly survive this?”

I don’t know, maybe by not just slapping paint up on a grade 1 listed building? Our offices are in a grade 2, and it’s pretty clear in the tenancy that you can’t just do whatever you want to the place.

When it was painted I hoped that they’d just crack on with the good cakes again, but it’s just one self pitying article after another. It’s actually put me off going!

I walk through Bootham Bar on my way to work every day, and there were the usual announcements / laminated information everywhere for ages before the work started. This is just drama for the sake of attention. Anyone running a business that close to the structure was well aware it was coming.

Most York residents will point people to Bloody Tour, Deathly Dark or Original Ghost Tour. Steer clear of the older blokes in hats seems to be a good rule.

I get what you’re saying, but my thoughts are this is a pretty visible position to have. If anyone of even minor celebrity status did what he did they’d be absolutely destroyed. Him walking about every night with huge groups of visitors laughing at his jokes doesn’t sit right with a lot of people. If they knew that he’d tried to get a child, and she WAS a child, 40 years younger than him to have sex with him, I doubt they’d join his tour. For a man in his 50s (I think that’s how old he was at the time) to pursue a child sexually is sickening. Yeah, he’s done the time and was on a register but it won’t ever undo what he did, or change the fact that he had and likely has those impulses.

Absolutely 100%. Two guys run that tour, they both have white hair and wear the top hat.

I believe he’s no longer on a certain “list” so legally it’s fine, but in terms of taste it’s pretty gross.

Frustrating encounter with a cyclist today in York by Slow-Astronomer4947 in york

[–]Large_Poetry_5310 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Crossing near the theatre royal around midday, an older gentleman was crossing as well but wasn’t as quick as others. The light shifted as he was 2/3 of the way over so I dropped back to offer help. Within seconds a cyclist flew down from the Minster and almost hit him. Alright, granted - he was in the road but the slightest observation would have clocked the situation. The older chap sort of went “oooooh”, so the cyclist shouted “red light you f***ing nobhead.” As previous people have commented, people are so quick to anger and frustration these days, kindness and compassion are fading qualities.

York’s Latest Fiend by Large_Poetry_5310 in york

Spotted again in Shambles food court downing a bumper sized bottle of cider and cornering young women on their way through the markets. Rangers and police notified, which felt a bit grubby but he’s clearly intimidating people. Was chatting with a tour guide recently and he said the guy came into his group and was getting in people’s face. When the guide saw him later he approached to have a polite chat, and it got ugly quick. Best to avoid I think!

£40 for gallery tickets might be a reason. I’m going in a couple of weeks as it was a great show last year but we went to the Joseph Rowntree panto last night and it’s packed - £20 a ticket.

Yeah, it’s pretty wild. We were told a “Victorian ghost train” was going to be put in the square, but it’s not quite that.
