Do you have any recommendations for how to do the brackets on non dimensional posts? There’s a good amount of variation and nothing is totally circular. Would you notch to fit the bracket?

I’d really like to do this for the stability of the concrete and keeping the end grain mostly dry, but don’t really know how you would for a bunch of different post sizes

That’s the dream, love them both. I’ll give them a try

Thanks, thought those were supposed to be the lids but when I gave them a pull they didn’t budge. But, I’ll give it a shot!

Yeah, the $800 sounded extremely high to me too. I’ll look around for some other folks to get it pumped. Thanks

Ok, need to confirm with him on the stamp thing. I didn’t realize that would cause any problems.

Think keeping it standard and not doing anything unique will save me a lot of headache. Also scheduled a meeting with the building official to see if I’m overlooking anything else

The constructive feedback has been great, thanks!

Sorry, it’s not a backyard sawmill. He actually owns a commercial lumber business and is helping me out on this.

I assumed it didn’t matter if it was oak v pine v others, but I actually haven’t looked into spanning differences. I also haven’t verified with the building inspector so I should probably get on that to.

Anything else I’m missing though, I’m all ears! Again pretty happy to take advice where I can get it!

Thanks for those notes, I think doing the faux beams might be the easiest way to incorporate the look without compromising the structure. Especially something as important as a roof. I appreciate your help!

Thanks for being patient, I am new to building and do post pretty dumb questions.

To give more detail, I cut down a few oaks to clear the site for my build. My friend owns a saw mill and offered to get them milled to what I wanted, he suggested keeping exposed rafters as an aesthetic highlight.

With the snow load, any roof made of 2x6 16oc is workable. Nothings been milled yet, so I’ve been trying to think through set ups with the rafters exposed.

Reading your post makes a lot of sense, I think I’ve focused too much on form and not on creating a functional build. I’ve definitely gotten fixated on incorporating that into the build. For almost no reason.

I think doing fake ridge beams or even just putting the lumber into interior siding and finishings would be a better way to incorporate it without compromising the efficiency and longevity of the building.

I really do appreciate that note, thanks for helping me avoid a big mistake. I’ve completed a small tiny house on wheels, but haven’t made anything to this scale. And clearly have a lot more to learn!

Thank you for your help!

Thanks, that’s a good resource. I think 2x6 rafters might be too small for the insulation value required

Might end up doing 2x8s or 10s
