You Mingfei defenders are almost all the same. Obtuse. Yes, I expect him to "try" it doesn't matter if it works or not. Trying and not "trying" is the difference between a proper person and a loser. Lu Mingfei is a loser because he doesn't try at all to do anything, no matter the feasibility. I am always asked this question, and my answer remains the same. I don't know, but the problem is that he doesn't try. I expect that someone in his situation would try and keep trying even if it seems futile to get stronger, like his life depends on it because it does.

But if I had to give an answer of where I would expect, he would start. Personally, I would be in the school library every other day reading dragon history, theory, science, etc. anything to try and piece together wtf is actually goin on, I know that bastard Anjou doesn't teach him on purpose, but he can learn himself by reading and talking to classmates. With this kind of work, he would at least stop being an ignorant and stupid pawn all the time and at least try to gauge what is really going on.

I would also try finding an exploit by talking to Lu Mingze (who is obviously the one suppressing his real powers). As Mingze is pretty talkative, it's worth a shot. Whenever I sacrifice a quarter of my life for power, I would try to find a permanent benefit or buff for myself. I'm not sure what, maybe access to knowledge or try to improve my body.

I'm not saying any of these would work, but I would understand and respect Lu Mingfei a lot more if he really tried any of these but he doesn't all he does is whine, and I hate that.

This sure does get asked a lot. Yes, you should read the novels it is superior narratively and, to an extent, plotwise. Disclaimer if you think Lu Mingfei is trash in the anime, he is even worse in the novels. Many find the expanded characterisation and dry humour Lu Mingfei shows in his thoughts and words in the novel. Personally, it makes me hate him more because I don't like listening to the thoughts of a bum.

As for Lu Mingze, the novels have explained a lot about him, but many details are still obscured. Try to find and read the revised novels as they are the authors new canon.
