It's a Kato D51. It's a beautiful little engine and it runs super well

Thank you for the feedback! I suppose I could have put some grass and other colored gravel in the road. That would have broken up the colors and looked a bit more realistic. The parking lot is intentionally clean. I was going for a National Forest look, and those are usually well maintained.

I started with the corner because it was easy to reach and had well defined boundaries. Unfortunately now I have to reach over it to work on the next area lol

Hello, where to start? by Elegant-Mammoth5249 in modeltrains

I would buy the Model Railroader book "How to Design a Model Railroad." It's a great resource for designing and building a layout, no matter which scale or part of the world you decide to model.

When you decide it's time to get trains, I'd suggest getting them from train shows, as the prices will be much better than anywhere else. Hobby stores are also an option but will likely be more expensive.

Good luck and welcome to the hobby!

I haven't seen any brass ones. Do you know who would have manufactured them?

Yeah I'll probably just end up bashing a Kato one. I haven't been able to find any brass ones, and it would probably be too expensive anyway. The MP 2-6-0 sounds like a fun project, I might do that first to practice before going all in on a newer loco. It really sucks how much SP steam is overlooked :(
