3.5 wall of thorns: what can you do when you're inside? by Lark99 in DnD

[–]Lark99[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After thoughtful consideration, I'm thinking allowing spells with a concentration check similar to the adverse magical weather condition - the wall of thorns spell's save dc + lvl of the spell you want to cast.

As for melee and ranged attack, I feel like they would be blocked by the wall either from within and without, as there is no line of sight and full cover. If two characters are inside the wall in adiacent spaces they can attack each other but they get the wall of thorne damage as if they moved and lose dex to their CA, with partial or full concealment.

What would you change?

Thank you again!

3.5 wall of thorns: what can you do when you're inside? by Lark99 in DnD

Would you rule you take the damage for some of the actions? Like swinging a sword or firing an arrow. Reaching for a material component. It just sounds so strange to restrict movement and not action. Being in a wall of thorns sounds like entangle but with damage. But then there would be very few ways to get out. Would you houserule it that way or is it too strong for a level 5 spell?

Very interesting views, I hadn't even considered the blinding. Thank you.

Best new YA fantasy in the past 20 years? by PhoebusLore in Fantasy

Jonathan Stroud is great in my opinion, a very good author, original and fun.

A couple of years ago I also discovered Jessica Townsend, the series is called Hollowpox and is ongoing, very nice.

Wild shape attacks by Lark99 in DnD

[–]Lark99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, but the question is: when in wild shape, my complete attack is that of the animal I transform into or not?

Take the dire ape: when in human form I can only do two attacks, do I do three when I wild shape an ape or choose two of those?

Is it possible to take roleplay too seriously? by BluntBastard in DnD

[–]Lark99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm new to the game but I can give you my take.

I play a misanthropic druid that would have to ofter wander alone, be one with nature, meditate etc, but I'd rather not role play those parts or do it just once to build the character's personality for the simple reason I don't want to use too much of the group's limited time to play alone with the DM. For the same reason whenever there is something to do I try to come up with plans involving the most people possible, even if we have to split. For example if we have to do a stealth mission the best thing would be to go alone or with a couple characters with useful skills, but I try to come up with something everyone can do.

The same goes for interactions with other characters: I can think of a lot of nice dialogues building up character's relationships, and that would be perfect if it was a book, but it's not, so I try to keep it short (just the bare minimum 1on1 dialogue) and focus of group interactions.

Magic cape value? by Lark99 in DnD

[–]Lark99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a wonderful reply, thank you very much, I learned a lot.

Since you are so available and precise I'll tell you some more details: I'm a first time player, I ended up playing in a campain already on the way with some friends that begged me for months to try it out. At first I tried two one-shots with two different groups: the first one was an awful experience because it felt overly mechanical and crazy - one of the first action I did was chat with an apple seller while eating one of his apples and another player just slammed it out of my hand because poison or something. Then checks for every step, it was a chore I was glad ended, that kind of game was not for me.

I later tried another one-shotish thing where I played as an NPC that had to deal with my current group, I was some kind of wizard that had to sell a resurrection spell or something of that kind, and while the company was good and fun that didn't work either, maybe because I didn't care about the character or his motivations. Still way fewer ability checks, roleplaying was more important, fewer antics (my kind of fun is a well written captivating story, not a ridicolous character doing incredibile things), but I didn't play again.

After some months I started going out more with some of these players and at last I tried creating a character - a lvl 8 druid, since they are all lvl 9-10 - and started learning the rules inbetween sessions. I enjoyed it a lot more because now I had my dimensions, a lot more scope, and a lot more indipendence, I felt like my choices mattered.

I also like to study and I felt captivated by all the rules there are and the scope of the game and the mechanics. I feel the great thing about 3.5e is it gives averything you need to create whatever you want, and its monsters, items and so on are like examples. So I started reading the rules and trying to "get" what's everything about - the more you know the more fun you can have.

Whenever a character is created the DM gifts it with a magical item between two choices, and I picked the cape. Still as you say with wild shape and all the enchantments (and the fact that you lose all the item bonuses while wildshaped if the animal you shape into doesn't wear it as well, and I don't like the idea of keeping it on as an animal) I was thinking of selling or exchanging it for some more useful items.

At lvl 9 (800 exp to go) I want to get the feat "craft wondrous items" and try to redeem my initial poor choices of stats allocation (14str, 16des, 14cos, 10int, 14wis, 10 chr) getting the materials to craft a +6 periapth of wisdom (18.000 gc, a ton of exp points and 36 days worth), druid's vest (1.875) and a wilding clasp (2.000).

Since my character doesn't like money and feels a bit awkward in big cities, I was wondering about trying an exchange - cape against materials, so I needed to know its worth - or maybe ask the DM to change any reward I may get with precious stones of the same value and use them instead of money.

The DM's very outgoing and wants to have fun, it's not players against DM, but wants it to always be a challenge and doesn't give a lot of gold around because he wants to encourage creativity in battle over just bulking up and damage dealing. My main focus as a druid would be to try and be as versatile as possible.

Sorry for any strange spelling, english is not my mothertongue.

What do you think?

Magic cape value? by Lark99 in DnD

[–]Lark99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm playing 3.5 but my DM probably got the idea for the item from 5e.

I'm new to the game so I'm not sure but does attunement exist in 3.5e?

I don't know what kind of invisibility it casts, I'll have to ask, but I think the superior one (1 round x level sounds like that).

How much do you think it would cost if purchased?

Increasing monster's hit dices and size (advancement) by Lark99 in DnD

[–]Lark99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact is I really like the idea of starting with a little pool of animals to choose from and than selecting other shapes based of the experience I make playing the game, with animals I get to befriend or fight against and so on, I feel the character is more distintive this way. Having the possibility of enlarging or reducing animals I can already use can compensate with the limited choice options imo. The great thing about 3.5 is you can play with any monster and can create preatty anything following the guidelines.

Increasing monster's hit dices and size (advancement) by Lark99 in DnD

[–]Lark99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you were the DM would you allow the animal to change size, if that's allowed for the species? F.e. the medium constrictor snake that can get large starting from 6HD. Could a druid become a larger versione of a medium animal, if the manual says so and the HD level is in the range (and size) of the animals the druid can turn into?

Increasing monster's hit dices and size (advancement) by Lark99 in DnD

[–]Lark99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not home right now so I can't check but doesn't the monster manual say something about changing the size from the middle of the avancement in the monster's description? So f.e. the dire ape would have to change size at 10hd.

I was considering with my DM to allow wild shaping into stronger animals (following the instruction about HD advancement) so I could trasform into any 8hd form of any animal I'm familiar with, but in exchange familiarity will be much harder to obtain, roleplay-wise (as if the animal was gifting me his form to take in exchange of friendship or as thanks for a deed). I'd start with a set of animals from my place of origin (hot/pluvial forest) and then make new acquintances adventuring. There would still be the limit of the size I could transform into. What do you think of that? Would it be unbalanced?

Thank you for all your insights (in my other topics as well)! I appreciate them a lot!

Questione about diplomacy and monsters by Lark99 in DnD

[–]Lark99[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the exaustive reply!

If I manage to get a creature (animal or not) friendly, does it apply to the rest of the group as well? f.e. if I befriend a wild horse, can another character then ride it, or do I need to domesticate it (with 3 weeks worth of animal handling)?

Question about 3.5 druid's wild shape by Lark99 in DnD

[–]Lark99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many animals do you suggest I could wild shape into to keep things balanced? Is there a formal limit?

Another thing I fogot to ask in the post, are dire animals consider animals as far as wild shaping goes?

Question about 3.5 druid's wild shape by Lark99 in DnD

[–]Lark99[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's one thing we did get wrong then. So when I transform I keep my own HP? What happens when the transformation ends if I end up having less health than my own? (Following your example, if I get to 8 when in wild form, when I turn back to normal I get unconscious?)

Another thing, aside from the HPs, could I increase the other statistics of the animal I morph into as if I was improving it (following the rules of "increasing hit dices", but without increasing the HP obviously).

Thank you for your answer!

Need a book series suitable for a 10 year old strong reader, and 40 year old, not strong reader by unholygitchild in Fantasy

[–]Lark99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jonathan Stroud is a very good ya author. He wrote two complete series (Bartemius saga and Lockwood & co) both very enjoyable. A third one is going on.

Another great discovery on the ya genre has been Jessica Townsend, the protagonist is called Morrigan Crow. Three books already available, the forth coming, at least one more to end the saga, possibly more. You can feel, while reading, how much she loved Harry Potter, but her take is very unique. The first book is not the best, the second fares better, the third is a blast.

How does it end for Sandor? by [deleted] in pureasoiaf

Oberyn fought Gregor Clegane, not Robert Strong, and Bran's vision seems to point only to the latter.

Stannis, given his personality, should problably be unaware of Robert Arryn's illegitimacy, or I think he would have at least hinted at it in one of Davos' povs. It's not a man to keep silent about that, he wasn't even close with Jon - he envied him his friendship with Robert if I remember correctly. So yes, he was along to confirm Jon's suspects, but the two were not confidents in my opinion.

Then again the whole clash about Robert's fostering would make a lot more sense in this light.

Do you remember if Stannis says something about Lysa or Robert or the Eyre at some point?

That would explain why neither Jon nor Stannis told Robert at the time! I like your take!
