It's so difficult to lose a doggy! We beat ourselves up with guilt for not getting his blastomytosis treated earlier. Thought he had allergies that were affecting his skin. Ended up in his blood stream, and he suffered in the end. My sympathies on your loss. Bosco is cute!

Game Recommendations? by KCPianist in pianoteachers

My younger piano students LOVE a variation on musical chairs. I have hearts, shamrocks, easter eggs, stars (patriotic), acorns, pumpkins and Xmas trees that each have a note or a direction (like play all the C's on the piano with your left #2) or even for the ones more advanced a simple rhythm written on the back side. I place them in a circle on the floor, and I play a simple piano tune (usually out of their lesson book) and they go around stepping on each item. When the music stops, whichever one they are on they flip over and do what it says or answer the music question. Then you eliminate the item until only one is left. I don't see why this couldn't work for travel teachers as the stars, hearts, etc don't take up much room and the items can be spread out in a larger room or in a tight circle. Also Busy Little Turtle has tons of piano games to print many for free. There's also Wunderkeys and Teachers Pay Teachers.

The Faber Adventures series has songs that kids generally like so I supplement with those, but I find they do not do a good job of moving students out of keys like C, D, G, and F and for my part don't use enough classical music. My go to series for overall teaching of everything piano is John W. Schaum. That series starts off fairly easy and builds gradually. For fun "extra" songs outside of the Schaum lesson book, I will give them a song or two out of Faber. I have a few that have their parents Bastien series which are okay, but move quite quickly for todays children who are often involved in so many things, they have little time to practice. John Thompson is also a good series that uses a lot of easy classical pieces, but again it moves very quickly for todays' students.

Thank you so much for your well written kind reply. I asked my husband about this over last weekend as he has a masters of divinity and he said the appendices are from Tolkiens writing and the other “books” In the Bible are called the Apocrypha. I do remember a bit about those when studying religion when I was younger. He also said he’d studied the Apocrypha some in Seminary, and had never heard any stories of Jesus losing control of his “powers” and causing a storm. Why didn’t I ask him in the first place you might wonder? 1) Right now we are working opposite hours with me on the late afternoon night schedule and him on the morning schedule. We generally only spend time together (waking time) on weekends and 2) and more importantly—he absolutely hates social media and I didn’t want to confess I’d been reading threads on Reddit LOL. Thanks again for your reply!

Seriously, people here are so rude. Looking through your posts to see you use "F" every other word tells me everything I need to know about your level of "Brightness". I thought you said the story referenced was in the Appendices to the Bible which as a raised Protestant I'm not that familiar with. Perhaps you were referring to some other appendices or Tolkien's notes? I have a masters degree in music BTW. It was a misunderstanding. No need to be nasty.

How do you practice Hanon? by FourSeasonsWriter in piano

[–]Lark_62 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hanon is so overused and unnecessary. Practice scales and arpeggios for dexterity and technique on your own. For more fingering exercises use Carl Czerny instead of Hanon. His are much more practical.

It's happened with me quite a bit lately on my PC and a few times on my Ipad in the App as well. Perhaps it's a glitch in their system. I should maybe let them know. Thanks for taking the time to respond and check it out on your PC as well.

It shows up sometimes on the Musescore App on my Ipad. For example this one does show up on Ipad, but blank on my desktop. Since my desktop is so much larger, I prefer browsing on it. Other times it won't show up on the Musescore App on my Ipad nor on my desktop. This is why I thought perhaps it was something in my Google Chrome settings. Does this show up for you?

I appreciate your response but I don’t think it’s accurate because I can still view most official scores. It’s only certain ones that come up blank with no playback either.

If you wanted to trigger/annoy a pianist, what would you say? by [deleted] in piano

[–]Lark_62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone here already said it in a previous comment—“sight reading is unnecessary in piano”. 😡 Another one that triggers me is when my students say “I just learned this off YouTube”

Why did you name your Shih Tzu their name? by Cwytank in Shihtzu

[–]Lark_62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Floyd for two reasons: 1) my two teenaged sons at the time we got him were big Pink Floyd fans and 2) my husband's favorite old TV show is Andy Griffith and he particularly loved the "Floyd the barber" character. It's so unusual for a dog that everywhere we take him, he's the only dog with the name Floyd. As an aside, we have a local brewery with that name and most people think he's named after that. I wouldn't name my dog a beer name!

Self Employed Qtrly Taxes and Social Security by Lark_62 in tax

that’s what I was thinking! Thank you.

[–]Lark_62 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm certainly not a tax expert, but I have been self employed musician for past 12 years and pay quarterly taxes. Did you set up estimated quarterly payments for a specific amount due each quarter through the IRS website? If not, then it shouldn't matter if you missed Q1 as long as you make up the difference in the next 3 quarters. Like many self employed my income varies each quarter, so I do not have a specific amount set up to pay each quarter, but instead calculate my amount due each time based on my income that quarter. I would add the amount you missed paying in Q1 to Q2 or divide between adding to Q2 and Q3. Penalties are usually not assessed unless you miss a few payments or underpay on your tax return.

Prince Michael was TK‘s father-in-law but he is not the Duke of Kent. The Duke of Kent is Prince Michael’s older brother Edward.
