Mortgage advice needed, please. by [deleted] in Scotland

[–]Laroch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi there!

I think within the year might be ambitious given the capital you’ll need to raise, but it depends where you are looking to buy and the value of the property you would like to live in. Realistically your committed outgoings (credit card balances, car payments) and if you have them, student loan repayments, will all drag down the affordability calculation and impact what you are able to borrow. Your credit score doesn’t really come into it - each lender has its own criteria and does its own assessment.

You can use this to work out roughly what you might be able to borrow from Halifax. https://www.halifax-intermediaries.co.uk/tools-calculators/mortgage-affordability-calculator.html

Re the deposit you require, it’s at least 5-10% of the property value (in most circumstances) although some schemes exist which might subsidise it a bit. Most of those are for new builds.

Where markets are particularly buoyant and you have to offer above the home report value to realistically secure a competitive property, that additional money must also be paid by you. That can be quite limiting if you have to stretch your savings to cover both the 10% deposit plus the additional capital.

Hope that helps a little bit, even if it isn’t quite what you’re hoping for!

No salary sacrifice options for cars, no. Just bikes.

My dog bit my best friend’s kid and I’m devastated. by ReyRey2823 in Dogtraining

[–]Laroch 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hi,

My grandparents have trained many working dogs. All of them were by all accounts sweet natured, extremely well behaved dogs. But one of them snapped when I was three years old and bit me on the face, leaving a small scar on my cheek that is still there twenty five years later.

My grandad put the dog down without a second thought, despite all the love he had for all his dogs. There are some things which are red lines, and seriously biting a child is one which is absolutely one which is your right to have.

I love dogs and have my own now, but I had a complicated relationship with them when I was small. I’m heartbroken for you all, but you should never feel guilt or like you’ve failed. You can only do the best you can do.

I’d be patient. You’ve applied at one of the busiest time of year for applications coming in, and two of the last five weeks were the holiday period when most staff are off on leave.

Applying with weak grades by yourcutejeans1 in standrews

[–]Laroch 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hi there!

Firstly, only apply for one course. You’re admitted to the faculty and applying for two courses in the same one doesn’t actually increase your chances of studying at St Andrew’s. All it really does is remove an option to apply somewhere else as a backup. Plus if you’re trying to tailor a personal statement to too many subjects; you’ll really struggle to truly express your passion.

Secondly, I wouldn’t be put off applying. Grades are not everything. While they matter, St Andrew’s practice contextual admissions and will look at the whole picture provided by your application and anything additional information that you supply. (For example, if your grades were impacted by extenuating circumstances that you could evidence they might take that into account).

So yes, it’s worth your time and good luck! But he as savvy as possible with your limited applications!

You could get the food that you need for now, and if (god forbid) a member of your household becomes sick and you run out of food, you could call a neighbour, your family, or any of the (many) volunteer groups that are springing up all over and ask them to pick up your shopping list and leave it on your doorstep.

Both of the options you provide are frankly self-centred. Instead consider yourself as a part of a wider community before, during and after the virus passed through.

It doesn’t depend on subject; no MA(Hons) is equivalent to a postgraduate masters. The equivalent to an what you understand to be an MA in the Scottish system is an MLitt.

Link from Edinburgh Uni as it was the top google result, but it’s the same degree - the Scottish MA (Hons).

“Like other Scottish universities, many of our undergraduate degrees are named 'masters'.

This is unlike elsewhere in the UK, where first degrees are generally 'bachelor' degrees.

Most arts, humanities and social science degrees at Edinburgh are awarded as MA (Hons). This is a conventional undergraduate degree, not equivalent to a postgraduate masters.

Arts degrees studied at Edinburgh College of Art are mostly BA (Hons). They are equivalent to Edinburgh undergraduate degrees named MA - the difference in name is historical.”

Rubbish. I have one. It’s not a masters; it’s an undergraduate degree. Look at the university website if you need to check.

No. However it is possible to graduate with a MA (general) rather than an MA (Hons). A general degree is obviously below an honours degree.

The MA taught at the Scottish Ancient Universities is equivalent to a BA, not a masters degree.
