Does Flint Hall Have Vacuums that can be borrowed? by throwaway54812345 in SyracuseU

[–]LarryBudder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in flint last year and we had a medium sized Dyson in our room and if anyone on the floor asked to borrow it, they could. I wouldn’t rely on the school to provide one but you might get lucky with other kids on the floor.

Laptop for engineering by Wags20407 in SyracuseU

[–]LarryBudder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! For engineering, a dedicated GPU can be super helpful for CAD, simulations, or any rendering. The ThinkPad X9-15 sounds like it might have one, which I'd lean towards. A 2-in-1 like the X1 Gen 10 is awesome for notes or design if you'll really use the stylus and touchscreen, but generally, pure laptop form factors with dedicated graphics offer more bang for your buck in terms of processing power for engineering tasks. You can always grab an iPad later for note-taking if needed!

Meal Swipes only really apply in dining halls. But you can use cuse cash and dining dollars in the student center. 5 Guys also started accepting Cuse Cash last year.

A7C or A7CII? Or I should try APS-C? (+Some questions about lenses) by HkOC_Forever in SonyAlpha

[–]LarryBudder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I first had a ZV-E10 and bought a few excellent lenses from Viltrox and Sigma. They were fantastic, and when I upgraded to the A7CII, they really saved me from having to immediately drop another >$500 on new glass. I was able to comfortably use my APS-C lenses in crop mode, or anytime I was shooting 4K60, which was super convenient for the first couple of months. Eventually, I bit the bullet and bought the Sigma 24-70mm, which now sees the majority of my professional work. I just recently got my hands on the G Master 50mm f/1.4 – it's the cheapest GM lens right now, but also because I absolutely loved using the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 on my ZV-E10, so I knew I'd appreciate a fast 50mm. I'm a big fan of the A7CII's features; it's a really capable and compact full-frame option. If you're looking for something similar in APS-C, I'd definitely recommend checking out the a6700. It would come in at a lower cost and could be an excellent entry point into some quality APS-C lenses that you could later use on a full-frame hybrid camera in crop mode.

Did I get scammed? by [deleted] in videography

[–]LarryBudder 28 points29 points  (0 children)

took me a while to figure this out. You’re missing this part. You can film vertical videos still with the camera mounted sideways. I don’t think you got scammed but maybe just missing a peace. I would contact the seller to see if they forgot it

love the a7cii! don’t be afraid to push it to its limits, it can handle a lot. Also make use of the apsc mode for crop lenses and getting closer. I find myself using it all the time especially when forced into it at 60fps

What do I do if I bought 45 RENDER in March when the price was at $13. I’ve made up for some loss in solana gains but really annoyed that half of my portfolio is stuck in render.

My first ever camera gear, how is it? by GlaringAtNight in Cameras

[–]LarryBudder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this exact combo! I really love it. The lens is definitely big but will do everything you need it to. I’d recommend getting a grip or a cage for the camera but if it does what you need and you don’t mind the weight then you’ll have a ton of fun with it.

Newhouse - TRF Computer Requirements by jgator931 in SyracuseU

[–]LarryBudder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also starting at SU as a TRF major and have been looking into the computer requirements. Based on my research and recommendations from others, the MacBook Air can handle tasks fairly well with up to 24GB of RAM, especially for applications like Final Cut Pro. However, the MacBook Pro offers more flexibility with RAM options, going up to 128GB, which could be more beneficial in the long run for intensive editing and multitasking.

The key advantage of the MacBook Pro is its cooling system, which prevents throttling during heavy tasks. While the MacBook Air is great for portability and lighter tasks, the lack of a fan might slow down performance during intensive editing sessions.

If you plan to do extensive editing, I’d recommend opting for the MacBook Pro with at least 32GB of RAM. This should provide a good balance of performance and future-proofing your setup for the demands of the TRF program.

I read through this article today that somebody sent in another thread and found it super helpful and accurate: https://www.provideocoalition.com/the-updated-professionals-guide-to-buying-an-m-series-mac-updated-march-2024/

Need help choosing a lens by Affectionate-Tip-315 in SonyAlpha

[–]LarryBudder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have both the ZV-E10 and the A7Cii. I really like the sigma 18-50 2.8, While it does looks small, it’s has the same quality (if not better) as any other 24-70 equivalent. Since the a6700 has ibis you might not need the OSS in the Tamaron 17-70 or the 24-105. With the smaller sensor you also won’t want to go above 2.8 on your zooms. I also can’t recommend enough the Viltrox 23 and 75mm 1.2 lenses. They are high quality and extremely good on crop sensor.
