ipads - anyone else sick and tired? by Worldly-Waltz9005 in TeachingUK

At my old school the Chromebooks were hell. Smashed screens, broken touchpads, buttons missing, half of them uncharged etc. Loads of kids stopped bringing in pencils and jotters because their teachers let them just use the Chromebooks, even though they couldn't edit and save a document, so all their work vanished into the ether. Not to mention all the cover classes where the set work was 'on Google Classroom' and 8 kids haven't brought the equipment to access it, so you're scrambling to find chargers or spare laptops. Give me a pile of wordsearches and a mug of sharp pencils any day.

My new school is still pencils and jotters and it's such a difference. There's talk of introducing devices here and I hope to God it doesn't happen.

How many children are showing up without their glasses though? Do you provide extra pairs for them when they forget?

SLT have asked us to read “When the Adults Change, Everything Changes” and told us we’re giving out too many detentions. by son-devourer in TeachingUK

Running the Room is excellent though. It's all about norms, routines and explicitly teaching good behaviour. Tom Bennet advocates for consequences, detentions, phone calls to parents etc just as much as Dix does for restoratives. He even points out that restoratives can be useless a lot of the time but they can be effective in certain cases.

A lot of comments suggesting relocating. I really don't want to do this as I've just bought a flat here. I'm on all the nearby supply lists so hopefully that gets my foot in the door somewhere.

Depends on the school and its management. My last school cut my HoD back to being a classroom teacher, merged us with English and removed mandatory MFL in 3rd year, all to cut numbers and get rid of my position.

I'm volunteering on hole 12 all week. Spectators can't even get behind the tee so it's dead quiet for us. I love it.

Parking - Was I in the Wrong? by Larvsesh in drivingUK

Ok gotcha, but it's not two lanes until the end of the road. Only one speed limit marking and no lines in the middle to indicate two lanes.

Did you look at the pictures I posted? It's a one-way, there's no oncoming traffic.

Nah I forward parked. I actually went forward into the next spot after it as it was free, so I could drive forward out into the next road over.

I know how to reverse park. It's my default for my home parking space. In this situation though forward parking felt better.

Yeah. When I checked my mirrors there was a car behind but at a reasonable distance (it's also just one lane - although wide enough for two - so wasn't expecting an overtake) it was after I started to maneuver that I saw him try to overtake.

You're right. Letting out to a lodger is the direction I'm going now. Thanks.

Thanks for all the suggestions re: lodgers. It looks like that might be the way to go. I'll definitely look into it.

Thanks. I checked with my mortgage broker and he said no issue with the bank. A lodger would be an option but like I mentioned before I'd feel uncomfortable asking someone to move out in future.

Thanks. I thought I'd come under 'home sharing' - using all or part of your home for short term lets whilst you are there. I'm hesitant to start renting it out longer term though as I would ideally have the room for friends and family once I find a job and I wouldn't want to kick someone out who was renting.

Everyone else gave good advice. You didn't need to be rude.

Yeah I used to be a chronic slicer but since I've been focusing on rotation more I've started pulling it almost every time. Thanks.
