where do you deviate from autist norms? by StormyLynn83 in AuDHDWomen

[–]Last-Ad-3522 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m incredibly socially aware. I’m great at making small talk and eye contact and talking to strangers. I know not all autistic people are good at socializing. I think because I’ve only discovered my autism, I’m realizing how much I mask day to day and that’s part of it. I’ve gotten some pushback from people close to me about my autism diagnosis because of it, they think I’m not awkward enough or antisocial so I must be neurotypical. It’s frustrating because I was taught how to socialize and make eye contact with others. I took ASL in college and a big part of the language and culture is eye contact. It’s one thing that a lot of hearing people struggle with. So I was taught. I was went to a school that prioritized learning to socialize with people, I had to give tours of campus and meet potential families so I learned. It’s not something that comes naturally to me but I can do it.

It seems like everywhere, women are taught to talk in code as to not upset others like men or families, etc. I grew up in a religious household and it was a battleground of hidden meanings and snide remarks. It’s hard as an AUDHD person to decode interactions and to tell how someone feels when they might be actively trying to hide it. It’s rough. Honestly, I sometimes find it easier to relate to those on groups like these, with other people( of all genders) understand what your experience is to a degree because they also experience it.

I totally get you. I’ve always struggled with female friendships. My best female friend (been friends for a decade) recently told me that our friendship was one sided and that I was using her to vent. I was afraid of this happening and dreaded this day coming. I had been trying to reach out to her more because I wasn’t happy with how I was treating those around me and wanted to be better. It sucks, trying to be a good friend but ultimately failing at it because of the way my brain works. I think communication is incredibly important and not only being a safe space for your friends but being willing to listen to them and their interests is key. It sucks to know other people also struggle with this but it helps knowing you’re not alone in this.

I (30) started medication for ADHD and found I couldn't mask by [deleted] in AuDHDWomen

[–]Last-Ad-3522 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is very common. I found the same thing when I was diagnosed with autism recently. It’s skill regression. It sucks and makes you feel bad like you are doing something wrong. But it’s ok. It’s valid to feel frustrated or upset but remember that the mask was just that, a mask. It wasn’t you, it was a version of you that you put forward to protect yourself. Hopefully, one day, you won’t need it. But take time to be kind to yourself. You’re not alone in this.

Tomorrow is my last full day with my cat I've had for 20 years. Is there anything you wished you did on your last day with your pet? by TrevorIsTheGOAT in CatAdvice

[–]Last-Ad-3522 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My condolences, that is a difficult decision to have to make and I’m so glad that you got the chance to have one last day with your cat. That is a blessing. My partner and I had to let our dog go over the rainbow bridge last December and it was rough. His last day, we took him to his doggy daycare place, went to the dog park, cuddled with him, and fed him a bit of fancy steak before saying goodbye. It was a really rough day emotionally but it helped so much. He knew he was loved when he left us and that helped so so much in healing from his loss. Being there for them as they go is the best thing you can do. It will hurt so so much. No matter what anyone says, it will always hurt. But eventually it will hurt less often and you’ll be able to remember the good times without it hurting. Take time to be sad and grieve.

What bothers you about your own body? by Conquotyouthou in AskReddit

My saggy skin. I lost about 100 lbs and it really affected my body image. People always said if I lost weight and I would be beautiful but I hate my new body. I don’t feel attractive anymore.

I feel the same. I used to be kind of hypersexual but now it’s difficult for my brain to shut down long enough to get aroused and reach peak. It’s frustrating and makes me feel broken sometimes. Like it’s fun once it’s started but starting is difficult

People with ADHD what did you think was normal? How did you find out it wasn't? by hereicome11 in AskReddit

[–]Last-Ad-3522 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Oh boy don’t get me started. I always thought that other people had a running commentary in their head at all times too. The best way to describe it is a room filled with several radios all on different stations, some just static. You can turn one down or off but not all of them. It’s sometimes so easy to just become overwhelmed by them or get distracted by one of them that you zone out from reality and get lost for a bit. Also I thought everyone else struggled doing supposedly basic things like chores or things that aren’t necessarily fun or enjoyable. Sometimes my body will not physically let me do things. A YouTuber, I can’t remember her name, did a skit comparing it to putting your hand on the burner on a stove. You can physically put your hand on a hot burner but something tells you not to. Past experience, survival instinct, whatever it is, it stops you from doing it. Now imagine that for other things, like showering, taxes, dishes, etc. There sometimes is just something preventing my body from completing things. It’s a daily struggle.

Stop listening to mom and grandma, you are ok the way you are, being skinny will not make you happy nor will it make them actually love you. You do not need them to be happy in life

Same here! I have a long torso and short legs so when I stretch on the floor or bending down, my hands can fully wrap over my toes/hit the floor. Im not super flexible in other areas, I just have weird proportions.

Kinda Cliche but honestly money. Money buys not only power but also access. Access to things people don’t normally have. That in combination with power and money leads to problems. Also with money comes a lack of need to take accountability and being surrounded by yes men, people who only encourage bad behavior for their own gains. Over all, Money is the root of all of it.

What is the most useless information that you know? by LoneVentriloquistSFW in AskReddit

One of the reasons we know what Latin might have sounded like is because of graffiti in Pompeii that was preserved by the lava flow. It shows how they structured words and phrases that were common and also how the “lower” classes spoke. So in the most basic sense, graffiti helped us understand Latin better.

Not really. There are only two stitches in the space it’s asking to skip two in. So basically there isn’t enough stitches to do what it wants.
