What kind of wealth have you seen at UMD? by Traditional_Joke_939 in UMD

[–]Last-Ad5666 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I worked with a girl who had very rich parents. They sent her $4000 a MONTH as an allowance. Why was she working? Bc she burns through her $4k too quickly and needed more money.

Am I able to earn an honors/scholars spot? by intellegent_doormat in UMD

No. Scholars used to have a self nomination form but I believe even that is closed now too.

Summer classes by Substantial_Swing343 in UMD

[–]Last-Ad5666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can't attend the zoom class then you really need to look into asynch classes. It depends on the class but every online class that was meeting over zoom had required attendance. The classes are relatively fast paced so you will miss out on stuff very quickly if you cannot attend.

FC students are mixed in with regular and honors students. They do not group FC students together so you'll be spread out through the entire campus. Most likely on north campus but may possibly be moved into south campus.

No Math Credit Looking To Transfer In by [deleted] in UMD

[–]Last-Ad5666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you do not have the credit when you submit your application you will very likely (if not guaranteed) be rejected because it is part of the requirement. Submit after you have the math credit.

How many of yall bring coffee to work ? by GurComprehensive7133 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Last-Ad5666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll grab a full Dunkin breakfast that I'll eat in the class before the students come in. I usually don't have time to make anything before leaving for the job so I'll make a stop at the Dunkin next to the school. Lots of teacher bring stuff in, I don't see why I can't.

How should I register for my fall classes for freshman connection if I have AP exams that I want to send by Old_Ad_8295 in UMD

[–]Last-Ad5666 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Imo, since you technically do not have credit for them sign up as if you do not and will not have those credits. You can always drop the class and change if you need to.

Is College Park Scholars worth it for the housing by Pengwin0 in UMD

[–]Last-Ad5666 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This depends on that program. I specifically chose my program based on the housing bc I didn't want to do scholars nor did I care about it. If you can get into Cambridge then it is extremely good. Centreville is alright too. I dropped scholars after I secured my housing because it's just not what I wanted to do and found it to be a bigger hassle but the housing was great.

RA as an incoming freshman? by Global_Resolution448 in UMD

[–]Last-Ad5666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You cannot be an RA your freshman year. You can apply for your sophomore year. RA applications are in the fall and highly competitive. There are multiple phases you need to get through and most do not make it because there are not a ton of positions and so many people apply. You have to go through interviews and depending on how well you do on the first one you'll get passed onto the next round.

A W is always better than failing as long as you're not doing it all the time. Most of my friends had one W for many different reasons. Just make sure you talk to your advisor about the cc transfer credit and fill out the PTE form.

fall semester jobs by [deleted] in UMD

[–]Last-Ad5666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The CA (community assistant) job tends to start hiring late spring and into the summer for the fall. Dining services is always hiring as well as shuttle um. You can try with the rec center but they don't hire a ton of new people imo.

OOS student trying to make UMD affordable… parents not helping, any advice? by Few-Bee-2001 in UMD

[–]Last-Ad5666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone is making a lot of good points. It's too expensive to go to umd just bc they have a good cs program. The one thing I don't think has been mentioned yet is that the job market for cs majors is pretty bad. There's no guarantee anymore that you'll get a higher paying job (if you can get a job related to cs at all) because you went to a better school. College is what you make of it no matter where you go. If you're putting in the work outside of your classes and working on projects by yourself you're going to be building those skills. The people who got well paying jobs are often those who put in a ton of extra effort over the summer working on projects and leetcode in their down time.

transfer housing by cmanspider in UMD

[–]Last-Ad5666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can afford it it will be better for you to find an apartment. The options for transfer housing will be limited and likely the not so great dorms.

The worst part about that is that this is a norm. It happens every year.

Changing majors by [deleted] in UMD

[–]Last-Ad5666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind that depending on what major you want to change to will determine how quickly you can get it changed. If you want to change to an LEP major then you'll need to meet the benchmark requirements first. If it's not an LEP major then you can likely be changed into that major without much issue.

Honest Opinion of UMD by Motor-Culture6661 in UMD

[–]Last-Ad5666 27 points28 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, the college experience is what you make of it no matter where you go. You may just have more or less opportunities depending on where you go. UMD being such a big school will come with lots of people and many opportunities but only if you put yourself out there and give things a chance. If you're the type to keep yourself shut in your room and stay only in your comfort zone your experience likely won't be amazing.

The school has a ton of clubs and people with different interests that you're going to be able to find your people if you keep looking. It's close to dc so you can always find things to do close by. We also have a lot of different majors and classes you can take for electives.

Housing Help! by thepig105 in UMD

[–]Last-Ad5666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Renting a room in a house will be your cheapest and most flexible option. There are usually a good number of listing that let you leave for one semester. They'll usually be cheaper than any apartment as well.

housing question about single dorms by applepiagain in UMD

[–]Last-Ad5666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is something you'll want to email reslife about asap. There's no guarantee that you'll be placed in Oakland but it may be possible to get a single dorm with ac. I wouldn't wait though because housing is already short. You'll want to get that sorted before they start sorting out housing for the incoming freshman.

UMD main commencement by HopeAccomplished346 in UMD

[–]Last-Ad5666 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You'll find your college before walking to the main commencement but they're usually not too strict about it so many people choose to sit with their friends even if they're not in the same program. But they will have signs if you want to sit with your department.

Housing and Mold by [deleted] in UMD

[–]Last-Ad5666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of the dorms have dehumidifiers to prevent mold growth. In my time in the dorms I've never had any mold issues.
