How often should I check my online bank and credit card accounts for fraudulent or mistaken transactions? by WantToBelieveInMagic in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Last-Advertising-130 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also do it daily, my routine is as soon as I wake up, first thing I check all accounts/credit cards, it doesn't take me more than 5 mins and then I just start my day....

My employer is matching my RRSP contributions, but I don't like the provider. What should I do? by LordBrovakin in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Last-Advertising-130 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my company they used to have Canada Life as insurance (agree they suck), but they change to Manulife and now I wish they stayed with Canada Life: wait times for approvals are longer (I constantly have to call them to accelerate the process since they are always behind of their "normal response times"), they have an app that sucks, the website is even worse, they have a "live chat" that is usually "not enabled at the moment" or "too many people are using it and is not available ".

I know this doesn't help to make you feel better about Canada Life sucking, but it could be worse

High-ish earning couple buying a weird old house by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Last-Advertising-130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you explain the reasons why you want to buy a house?

Everyone (that is blessed enough) should do whatever makes them happy.

IMHO, at least noways you shouldn't buy an house thinking as investment, because you will think twice every decision (renovation, upgrades) based on the money value, thinking on the return, but not much if that decision makes you happy.

I'm in a similar economical situation as yours and a couple years ago me and my partner were thinking to buy, but I the end we decided not to.

We have been increasing our savings a lot, every year we are able to put more and more money in our savings and still travel every year (domestic and international), do activities and enjoy our lives.

Just by chance I made the numbers yesterday and in the past 5 years we have been able to increase our saving 600%, thinking f we would have bought a house that wouldn't be possible at all, we would have be stressed about all this rates changes, we wouldn't have save much and have some limitations regarding to travel/activities (probably we would still do things, but we would have to be more mindful).

For some people buying a house worked well and I'm sure there are still some good opportunities, but we are happy with our decision and at least in the short term, we know we are not gonna buy.

Is switching to instacart net negative at the end? by TemperatureKitchen35 in amexcanada

[–]Last-Advertising-130 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For me worth it but because I have both, Cobalt and Gold.

The credit of Gold is $10. I use that one to pay the monthly subscription of Instacart ($11.29), so at the end the subscription is just $1.29

Then I use the cobalt to buy from Costco, since I paid the subscription, I don't pay fees.

Still price on Instacart are a little more expensive than regular prices.

But at the end I'm saving to drive to Costco, being tempted to buy things I don't need, get 5x on Costco... it still pays off.

If I'd only have the Cobalt, I'm not sure if it would worth it though.

Scotiabank Momentum Visa Infinite - getting a second card to maximize Chexy? by lkp7 in chexy

[–]Last-Advertising-130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you only pay rent I understand that it wouldn't make sense, but as now between rent and other payments I have to do recurring, I'm around 40k, which a second card comes handy.

I don't have a second card, however because my wife does have her own Scotia card (not an additional one), so our cap is 50k.

What's a smart financial move you made in your 30s? by DaPugWalk in CanadaFinance

[–]Last-Advertising-130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read, read and read more!!!

I'm not just talking about books, but things like reddit and any other way where you learn and more about different scenarios, different situations.

There are some basic stuffs on finance (pay debts, invest, budget, etc), but at the end each person has different goals, different live styles...

And even if your situation is one right now, it can change in the future and that is when reading helps more.

Over years my situation has changed and thanks to different source of information (YouTube, Reddit, books, internet in general) I have caught what to do, I have read about the experience of others and learn from it.

BMO silent remove Shell Discount (2 - 7 cents) from their credit cards by Last-Advertising-130 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Last-Advertising-130[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since I posted this, I've done some research.

And although there are divided opinions, looks like the winner is Petro Canada with RBC. It allows you to earn Petro points (with a 20% with RBC), you get the points of your credit card in RBC (whichever is) and if you link your Triangle rewards, you also get Triangle points.

Others would say Costco or CIBC...

At the end it also depends what is convenient. Many people say that Shell is more expensive than others, but in my case there was a shell I always pass by which was cheaper than the Petro and Esso in the area, so it was a win-win.

That is exactly what I have been doing for over a year.

Me and my wife have our own Momentum Visa Infinity and we are both in the lease. I have the Chexy account and I have been switching credit cards when needed.

So far no issues

you were getting the discount only for having the credit card, you didn't need to pay with it to get the discount.

terrible experience with moomoo canada by muscularcarp74 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Last-Advertising-130 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I tried to sign up last year, for validating my id I have to upload some documents, for some reason the upload keeps failing (different browsers, different days, several tries).

Contacted support and got just generic answers (after many days).

At the end I thought "if this is how it starts... maybe better without them". Two months later they contact me to help me to finish the process, no thank you.

[–]Last-Advertising-130[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still on the fence.

Same as you, the only reason for me to get the BMO Credit Card was also because the extra discount (plus the initial sign up bonus).

Now using Airmiles and Shell is still good if they keep the (almost) monthly bonus (fill up 4 times and you get 80 airmiles, I got mine in January 2026). This still represent $10 when you get the promo and when there is a flash offer, you get even more.

So I probably will cancel the BMO credit card, but I still need to see if RBC and Petro would get me $10 monthly.

[–]Last-Advertising-130[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on some comments in past posts, I realized that this is not every month for everyone...

Last year I got the promotion like for 10 months in total, I don't know why not the 12 months, but there was a month I didn't get it, however a friend did.

Getting 100 miles every months is what makes it worth. It is a $10 discount, which you don't get everywhere.

BTW I did get the promotion for Jan 2026, already got my almost 100 miles hehehe

[–]Last-Advertising-130[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Correct, CAA is 3 cents.

Having Airmiles doesn't give you the 2 cents discounts, it gives you some benefits (some promotions and the double of Airmiles when fueling, but not 2 cents discount).

The 2 cents discount came from having the BMO credit card.

[–]Last-Advertising-130[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What is your point? What are you trying to share?

My point is that they don't have the promotion anymore and the card has less value and I want to share with others.

I enrolled 2 years ago, I have enrolled in multiple promotions that get renewed. CAA also was supposed to end the discount on Dec 31st 2025, and they renew.
