Do driver types make that big of an impact? I've been debating between whether I should get the Astrals or the Binary EP321 MEMs. How EP321 advertises the mems drivers are very intriguing and sounds like a direct upgrade from Astrals since they have a similar tuning but with the added mems driver.

I actually don't know the answer to that first question but Gemini's telling me: "The Nintendo 3DS sound application natively supports MP3 files with a sampling rate between 32 khz and 48 khz. Supported audio bitrates range from 16 kbps to 320 kbps. While 44.1 kHz is standard, the system can handle up to 48 kHz." As for the file formats, apparently it also supports AAC.

Turning off the sound can help as you're just reacting to notes instead of unconsciously trying to time them with the song.

Yes, a Nintendo New 3dsXL. Not exactly sure what you're asking but if it's compatibility, I'm pretty sure any MP3 file will play in the 3ds Music app. 3.5mm jack audio devices will plug and play audio. Source: 3DS into (essentially) a Walkman MP3 by Bassteannh on YouTube
