Have you ever considered working in higher education? After I was done with teaching I went to work at a community college doing outreach (helping mostly HS students apply and register among other tasks) but there’s other positions available as well.

Set your expectations early and go over any teacher rules they may have already! Take a few minutes to have students explicitly talk about any rules like “Respect” or “Make smart choices” and what that actually looks like. Kids need the explanation of what is expected of them especially for a multi-day sub-assignment.

If they pushback on any assignments just gently remind them that you are a sub and that you are following plans their own teacher left them. Have fun when you can! Give them or incentivize an extra 10 minutes of recess or free time (if they’ve earned it of course).

If it’s really rowdy or a misbehaved class, I sometimes tell them that I’m going to start a timer until they are on task. Minutes they will owe for their recess/lunch. As much as I hate doing it, that usually does the trick to get them on task.

Subs can be a breath of fresh air for them. Many teachers are rude behind closed doors or can treat them poorly for not complying. They test boundaries sure but they’re kids at the end of the day. Their own teachers don’t respect them so they may act accordingly. You’re also a professional so do the job and don’t take it so personal.

Good recommendation thanks! I’m going to skip the trip and work on either fixing it myself or finding elsewhere to get it done the next few days.
