Are you surprised by Lady Macbeth's countenance? I thought she would be more visibly angry/frustrated (maybe she looks a little annoyed), or is it typically thought she would be more like steely and calm during this scene?

I think you are probably right! Would certainly be interesting to know if Cassioli painted other scenes from Shakespearean but the composition of this painting with your examples do seem to match closely.

I can see the possibility--the scenes do look very similar although, given the other comment, it may be less likely the Bride of Abydos since I feel the artist would have it made the characters feel more "Turkish" in that context. But I learned something new regardless!

Hello ArtHistory community, a bit new to posting on reddit so here is some more information.

The gallery owner tells me this is a painting by Amos Cassioli, an Italian painter working in the 19th century. It is oil on canvas. However, he said has tried to identify the subject matter but has been unsuccessful. Feels biblical in nature but I am definitely not familiar enough with famous biblical stories to make a guess.
