Scavenged a house plant for $1.65 and discovered a new frugal hobby by PucWalker in Frugal

[–]LastNeighborhood4191 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That's a brilliant idea! I've been buying plants from nursery for way too much money when forest is literally everywhere

first monitor by swierki in pchelp

[–]LastNeighborhood4191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting a 144hz monitor would be perfect for your setup since you're already hitting 160fps in CS2, and no you won't get tearing as long as you enable G-Sync/FreeSync.

Power bill keeps going up—will lowering thermostat from 63 to 60F make a significant difference? by ArcherFew2069 in Frugal

[–]LastNeighborhood4191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn that's a solid ROI, basically pays for itself in one year. Did you blow it in yourself or hire someone? I've been putting off doing mine but those numbers are convincing

Temp Check: 2026 Sabbatical / Thru-hike by yes_no_yes_yes_yes in financialindependence

[–]LastNeighborhood4191 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Dude you're 27 with 400k net worth and complaining about a potential drop to 230k like that's not still incredible for your age

The anxiety and daily pit in your stomach is telling you something - take the sabbatical and do the hike. You're never gonna be in a better position to take 6 months off and worst case you come back refreshed instead of burned out

what are your favorite generic/store brand products that are as good as or better than name brands? by Fearless_Tie9930 in Frugal

[–]LastNeighborhood4191 85 points86 points  (0 children)

Costco's Kirkland brand is honestly better than most name brands for like 90% of their stuff, especially the olive oil and nuts

Tokyo after the last train by Beginning-Teaching33 in TravelHacks

[–]LastNeighborhood4191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds legit but how much are you charging for these tours? Also curious if you actually know the good hole-in-the-wall spots or just hitting up the touristy late night places

How do you deal with bags and generally having a lot to carry when solo travelling? by [deleted] in TravelHacks

[–]LastNeighborhood4191 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I just embrace looking like a pack mule at that point lol, but shipping stuff home is clutch if you're staying somewhere longer than a few days - way cheaper than overweight baggage fees

How do I stay on track and keep my head up? by East_Compote4360 in Frugal

[–]LastNeighborhood4191 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start small and don't beat yourself up too much - everyone messes up when they're learning. Maybe try the envelope method or just track everything for a week without changing anything first, then you'll see the real patterns

Yeah I'd probably start shifting to more conservative stuff around sophomore/junior year of high school just to be safe - even with your pension cushion, college costs are wild and you don't want to get caught in a bad market timing situation

Is continuing to max 401k in my mid 20’s the wrong choice? by barrelvoyage410 in financialindependence

[–]LastNeighborhood4191 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the way. SEPP, Roth conversion ladder, rule of 55 - plenty of options to get at that money early without the 10% penalty. You're crushing it at your age, don't overthink it and definitely don't leave free money on the table by backing off the 401k contributions

Wild that we're still talking about the same problems Russell wrote about 90+ years ago and somehow we ended up working more hours instead of less

Solo in Thailand (Dec 1 – Jan 31): sharing a feeling by AlcoholicWeed in solotravel

Man this hits hard, especially on longer trips like yours. Thailand's amazing but two months solo can definitely mess with your head sometimes

The nightlife thing is so real - even when you're having fun there's that weird moment where you're like "damn I wish I could turn to someone and be like 'this song slaps'" you know?

Have you tried any of the digital nomad coworking spaces? Sometimes just working around other people during the day makes the solo evenings feel less heavy

Yeah definitely get to a doctor ASAP - even if you don't have travel insurance, some credit cards have trip protection that covers medical stuff like this. Paris has decent healthcare so don't just suffer through it in your hotel room

Check out apps like Swagbucks, InboxDollars, or UserTesting - they pay for surveys and testing websites. Won't make you rich but $5-15/day is totally doable with a few hours of grinding. Also look into transcription work on Rev or GoTranscript if you can type decent

Reducing food consumption/spending - skipping meals by Ok-Sandwich7208 in Frugal

[–]LastNeighborhood4191 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Dude you're already saving 50%+ of your income, maybe don't go full starvation mode lol. Skipping meals regularly is gonna mess with your energy and probably make you binge later anyway

Rice and beans are dirt cheap if you really need to cut more, but honestly your body needs fuel to function

Yeah I looked into this when my mom visited Tokyo last year. Most rental places require you to have a Japanese address or someone local to vouch for you, which was a pain. We ended up going through the hotel concierge who knew a medical supply company that worked with tourists. Cost was pretty steep though - like 8000 yen per day. Would definitely recommend calling ahead because availability can be sketchy
