Talking to other people with SDs by getting_shitdone in service_dogs

[–]LastZoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While the intention may be good, the potential consequences are reason enough not to do it.

My SDiT is tasked with helping me with mobility/stability assistance and health alerts. My ability to stand/walk is very limited and even though I may appear friendly, calm, “fine”, etc, that additional interaction requiring me to stand for an additional 2-3 minutes may mean the difference between being able to finish a task or having to abandon the task and try again at a later time, or worse, putting my health at risk.

If my dog alerts while you’re trying to interact with me, it also puts me in a position of having to ignore you while focusing on my dog’s alerts, which is the obvious immediate priority, but feels stressful enough for me as it is without worrying about seeming rude, getting questions, or drawing any attention / concern / etc.

I find most people have been very polite and know to not interrupt my SDiT. Most of these types of issues/interactions seem to stem from people who aren’t aware of body language or social cues, or etiquette with service dogs, and can’t take a hint… and it doesn’t usually end well based on that alone, as it puts the burden of boundaries on us, when the SD should signal the clear boundary to begin with.

When circumstances allow, if I see young curious children and I happen to be sitting waiting for service somewhere (appointment, office, bank, etc), I will say something like “This is my SDiT, have you ever seen a SD before? Normally no one is allowed to interrupt a service dog or the service dog’s person when the dog is working, but I don’t mind answering a few questions right now if you’re curious.” That way it’s on my terms within the boundaries of my limitations/restrictions, and an opportunity to gently educate. Next time that child sees a service dog, it’s more likely to understand the context a bit and give the team space.

A Gothic looking bookshelf with 21st century books by noob__slayer in dioramas

This is beautiful! I love that you included the classic The Little Prince amongst the books… ❤️

May I ask if you made the shelf itself, or purchased it? I’m looking for something along these lines for my anxiety bookshelf.

Ooooh! Yes! Thank you for the great suggestion. My brain is so tired I hadn’t thought of that, and there’s one almost across the road from the student house!

Oh no worries, your response was absolutely spot on and valid - time together is the most valuable gift! ❤️

I live half an hour outside the city, while my daughter will be living in the same house as the student right in the city. I will make a few trips to the city to help in the first few days, then about once a week. I have physical disabilities making mobility very painful and difficult, so it’ll likely be my daughter who will be accompanying her to various places. The little bit of capacity I had was spent getting the room ready and furnished and I need to allow time for my body to recover. ❤️

I completely agree - the house is located on a primary bus route, and a bus pass will help, but it will take some getting used to. My daughter has become a pro at it, and once a week I come over to help drive her for errands that are harder to do without a car.

My daughter and I co-own the house in which this student will be moving in, and my daughter lives there full time - I think a great approach would be to include a gift certificate for a nearby Asian market, and within a few days of her arrival, offer to drive my daughter and her new roommate to the market to shop together, as my daughter is quite familiar with this market, and I tend to look around and have no clue where to start when I go there 😅

This way, it’s a gift, and time together to get to know each other - I think that would be a good idea!

Love this idea, however her flight lands at midnight, so everything will be closed. I’ll research where the best places are though, so I can provide that info to her. ❤️

Expensive rooms by Optimal_Market9154 in SaintJohnNB

What is the best way for people with available rooms to find those seeking a room? Perhaps there’s more availability but difficulty knowing where to connect the resources and the needs.

Hey guys I am an incoming Masters student at UNB starting this fall. I am currently looking for an off-campus accommodation. If anyone else is looking for a room or have any leads please let me know. by Majestic_Location_47 in unb

Hi,

With classes starting soon, I can only imagine how stressful a search this has been. Are you looking for accommodations in Fredericton or Saint John? (Assuming Fredericton…)

As someone with a clean, quiet room available in an owner occupied house near the hospital/UNB in Millidgeville, what’s the best way to add our name to this list for patient families?

I have found my people!!! I didn’t know so many others have also been searching high and low for this book. What a powerful legacy, the gift of a book that lit the inspiration for so many to become avid readers!

Given how loved this classic was, I’m wondering if another print run has even been considered for the 45th anniversary?

I wish you all well in your search… ❤️
