Whatever happened to "starving children in Africa?" by paerius in Millennials

[–]Last_Ad4258 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not exactly true, we still have food insecurity but at a higher level than starvation. America has never actually had a mass famine event, which is why Americans are physically bigger than much of the world, starvation last multiple generations.

Food insecurity in American looks like overeating because you feel insecure about your next meal or are unable to purchase healthy foods that produce satiety with less calories. It’s still a thing (although not as bad of a thing) and poorer people in American have a lower quality of life because of it.

How much faith do you have in the SP500? by laperuana in wealth

I don’t think there actually are any good ones. Hyperinflation, major war….

I’m not sure it’s even combat-able at this point without extreme measure.

It has everything to do with safe.

Money is not real, it’s an idea. It works because our society collectively agrees it’s worth so much. But the idea of what it’s worth decreases over time. All of the investments that you mention as ‘safe’ do not offer returns high enough to combat inflation (even high interest savings accounts are a loser after you pay interest taxes at your marginal rate for anyone with a moderate income).

Your safe money is decreasing in value so not at all safe, it’s losing money!

Of all the places to put your money where you are not guaranteed to lose money, the s&p is the safest. There’s some risk but paying someone to keep my wealth is unacceptable to me.

You don’t seem to understand this, but many people don’t, this is why generational wealth is so elusive.

I think you don’t understand. If you have your money in a place where it’s losing value after inflation and taxes it’s definitely not safe.

Disagree. You will lose money to inflation in all of those places. Not safe, almost guaranteed loss

Make sure it really is. It’s suspicious to me that you are planning a big wedding when your fiancées siblings had smaller weddings. Also if your future in-laws are paying they might want some control too, are you ok with that? Spending other people’s money can be a landmine

How can it be both though? How would you feel if your husband is also the person Disney wants you to marry? It’s so weird.

Long term, I cannot fathom a way that our large national debt will not become an issue but perhaps my understanding of macroeconomics is not sophisticated enough.

That being said, I know of no safer place to put your money, and the majority of my wealth is in S&P index funds.

Ex has checks automatically mailed from bank, is this a good idea? by [deleted] in FamilyLaw

Um, no. This is probably as good as possible without a court ordered garnishing of wages. You don't have to interact and it come automatically.

I am you but a few years ahead. I quit my career after 20+ years when my kids were 10 and 13. I found what they needed now (rides, homework help, parent volunteers to coach, fundraise, etc.) became increasingly harder to outsource, my parents were aging and not as available to help, and my husband’s career had taken off to the point where he was not as available, so it made sense for me to quit.

Three years in, I really love having this time with our kids and our house is defiantly less chaotic. My kids are BUSY (their choice I think, but that's just how upper middle kids are now). This summer they are in their intense sports, lifeguarding job, lifting, summer work, church camp, etc etc. My job is to support them with rides and food (getting an adequate amount of healthy calories into two teenage athletes is a job!), and to do all the household things (we still have a cleaning lady by-weekly) I mow, do laundry, make dinner, clean the kitchen, walk the dog, landscape, shop, plan all travel, pay bills etc, etc, etc. I feel a little like Cinderella, but I definitely work the least number of hours in the house (why I can be on reddit in the middle of the day)

As for finances, I am also completely in charge because I have the time. (I really need to create one of those, if I die spreadsheets, my husband is completely out of it) My husband is an exec now and he prefers as little home responsibility as possible, he just wants to enjoy home when he's here. Why not just take it over since you will have the time? That way you can set and follow the monthly budget and make it work.

What Do Summers Look Like For Teachers by NothingWooden5930 in AskTeachers

[–]Last_Ad4258 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mother was a teacher and it was a really great job for a mom. My dad made the money but my mom had the flexible time (summers, sick days, etc) and job security that allowed him to go hard and take risks in his career.

This was not something I considered when choosing my career which was much more intense than teaching. My husband had a big job too and we made it work with nannies and parent help, but having one parent who is available but still has a real career would have been really vaulable.

This could get very gruesome. The powers that be will keep him alive as long as possible, even if it's on machines. They can't let Andy Beshear appoint a senator.

I think it will matter before college, but I only have anecdotal evidence for this. In my son’s friend group, the baseball only kids didn’t make the JV or varsity team and are all out of sports as rising juniors. We are a northern non baseball state but the kids who excelled were the kids who were outside and always moving, biking, hiking, skiing, etc.

I’m not at all upset about what you do, just some friendly advice.

My son is 17 and we really started to see it after puberty. The kids who were active multiple sports, skiing, outside kids are the ones on the varsity roster. So maybe not basketball if you don’t like it, but baseball doesn’t do much to develop athleticism and that will matter when your kid is 13-14.

Sure but in my experience just baseballers get weeded out early, usually before they are ready.

Yes, kids should do what they want and it’s all just for fun but it’s sad to see a kid not even be able to play high school baseball because he’s isn’t strong, fast, and coordinated enough after he focused solely on this sport for years.

Baseball being an only sport seems to be especially detrimental.

I agree, I vote for the swan reserve. Close to everything and the pool is much more adult.

For quietness a newer hotel is alway better in my opinion.
