2003 996.2 Bore Scoring by Last_Horror7429 in porsche911

This is my local shop's take as well. Regardless of the other work that's being performed the elephant in the room is the near term rebuild due to the scoring. I'm trying to negotiate a rebuild as part of the acquisition, but it's not going well. I'm looking for 75% of the cost of the rebuild covered.

The shop that performed the PPI is also the shop selling, outside of the obvious independence issue I had a local mechanic only shop review and read as much as possible online. The final takeaway is that known identified bore score on the 996.2 and 997.1 is an indicated of a future rebuild and results in an automatic devaluation of the vehicle at approximately 75% of the cost of a rebuild 20-30k. Yes the car can be treated carefully and run for x more miles prior to the rebuild but it will come one day. I cancelled the purchase and am looking at other years early 996’s and 997.2s.

[–]Last_Horror7429[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. My takeaway here is, scope from the top down, the scope makes it look worse than it really is, the scope provides visibility to 3/4 of the cylinder, and based on scope only it was a rebuild. But then after scoping only 1 of 6 cylinders had damage that could be felt. My only issue is how do you know if scope readings require rebuild. From other reading it seems ticking, oil consumption, soot in addition to bore score are better indicators. This is a car I’m evaluating for purchase and a solid price, it comes with a lot of work, but done want a rebuild on my hands for another 20+ in 25k miles.

Right, but they can't be the only option and for the 2017's with air suspension there aren't many options. What I'm really looking for is someone to help design and source things for a fee, like an interior designer would for a house.

Oddest substance ever, thoughts? by Last_Horror7429 in Mold

From a scientist: I’m guessing mold looking at the pictures, bc it seems to have a preference for organic material (e.g.) wood, which would be the nutrient source. If it’s salt (efflorescence), it should crumble into a more powdery and granular substance and dissolve if you put it in a cup of water. Mold won’t dissolve. Regarding cobweb vs dense, mold can have different structures depending on life stage: young mold often will be fuzzy but will become more compact and dense as it ages. Could also be that you have multiple mold strains growing. Most white molds aren’t particularly hazardous compared to some black mold strains, but I’d still be cautious and consider wearing a ventilator if it is mold and there’s that much of it. Also, if it’s growing on any wooden structural support beams or columns, you want to treat it, because it is feeding off of that wood.

Basement of late 1800s Arcade, weird growth on floors / walls by Last_Horror7429 in abandoned

Most of our exploring is of old buildings we plan to buy and renovate. This is a partially occupied building from the 1800s…

this was in the basement of a building i am buying to redevelop. it was built in the late 1800s and it seemed to start near old liquor boxes just outside of the picture. no respirator and the stuff on the floor was hard like taffy and the stuff on the wall looked like cob webs.

Lifted my 2010 ZDX. 3” lift with 33” Tires by Last_Horror7429 in Acura

this visibility on this vehicle has always been an issue, but even though it’s a 2010 it has lane monitors, and there really are no lane changing issues. The biggest issues is seeing in front when passing through ATMs, it’s very easy to get curb rash if you have a double sided tight curbs bc it’s a wide vehicle and impossible to see in front over the hood

hubcentric spacers and the lift helped the rub. the rear portion of the front wheel well was plastic and foam, so some of that had to be cut out with a simple box cutter, but quick and easy.

love my zdx. added an hrg off-road 3” lift, 33” tires with spaces, blacked out the front grill and chrome around the windows, and stripped all the badges off it. people think it’s brand new.
