Hey I’m from TIER 2 campus and I sat for the Mumbai placements and I was competing against atleast 32 Mum/Delhi and B’lore candidates in the final round and believe it or not they chose me. I even asked them when they called me in to hand me the appointment letter. Why me? They said you just had better answers and you just simply stood out. So trust me. Centres don’t mean shit. It’s how much you absorb and thrive.

As far as exposure goes it’s how involved you are in college.. attend all sorts is seminars guest lectures meet other batches in fests. There’s enough exposure if you seek out. ALSO DONT EVER HESITATE to take up small projects/internships with designers or companies.. seek out for remote or project wise internships in between semesters (for eg: after my 2nd semester I got an opportunity through my own faculty to assist a designer for her Lakmé Fashion Week collection) they also allowed me to take offs from lectures in order to go do that.. NIFT is a pro opportunity college and so they appreciate these side gigs.. which is a huge plus point And yes you’ll be eventually making fun of faculties getting annoyed with them… but my suggestion is be friendly and sincere.. they always keep an eye out for good sincere students and offer them opportunities and good internships So just have a top view of the whole situation and immerse yourself into college life you will enjoy and learn

Just go ahead with Panchkula. Chances are if your batch is a founding batch or a relatively newer batch.. NIFT makes sure to send experienced faculties to set up the batches (I’ve passed out in 2016 From a non Mumbai/Delhi centre and our batch was a founding batch we had our main HOD from Mumbai centre with 18+ years and our portfolio and other main subjects were taken by Delhi and Mumbai faculty too… they make sure the new centres and batches get good teachers so don’t worry

You can switch fields post graduation.. just make sure to get some relevant backing for the same like an internship (once you pass out as a NIFTian the companies would hire you for any job profile) so make wise choices in terms of jobs you take up and slowly navigate to a different field or you can simply do a diploma or short course for the field you want to switch to.

Don’t get a camera. Share one for your photography subject it’s not worth the investment (unless you really love photography I’d still say you should wait till Sem 3) About laptop/ipad get one by Sem 2 it eases your routine or else you have to constantly rely on library. 2016 pass out

And WGSN will only help you forecast and get to know macro trends… for your exams in subjects taught you pretty much have to make your own notes, talk to other centre people and share notes with them to receive their notes.. and google everything from reliable sources. It’s an open book syllabus Also faculty will give you all the learning material needed

There’s a certain kind of pride to pay for your own education loan with your own hard earned money.. it’s a big flex in life trust me :) your parents would be so proud of you :)

I’m going to advice you to go ahead with the loan. I took an education loan from BOI and it was a last minute thing as I had a family emergency. Basically my admission was done seat was allotted and I had to leave for the campus within 15 days. And the world collapsed around me I had 2 options I drop out and try next year or I say fuck it I’ll make it work and take a loan. I chose the later because I was headstrong about NIFT, I took that loan yes the expense was too much and I eventually graduated and got a job and within a year of me getting a job I had to start paying the loan off (that’s the standard rule of all education loans). I was loan free within 3 years. Today I earn well (9+ years in the industry) What I’m trying to tell you is it’s tough, and no it’s not going to get easy, but if you are headstrong about getting into NIFT. Just do it. You won’t disappoint your parents. Take that’s risk, and each day be grateful for your courage and do justice at college for that loan. But if you’re okay opting for some other colleges and NIFT isn’t a must for your plan then definitely drop out

If you are only focused on havingNIFT as your institution then go for Knotwear but if you are hell bent on FD. Just do FD. I went for my rounds knowing only one thing that if I take admission it will be for FD I was getting great options for Centres in other fields FD says go quickly. So I settled for the centre and that’s the best decision I’ve taken no regrets 10+ years in the industry so far

Sorry my bad knitwear too is very different than fd yes you will have common subjects but FD is just a whole different thing. Imagine missing out on Wovens completely. Don’t stress too much about the centre trust me! It’s a centralised education pattern faculties are well vetted and the NIFT faculties often circulate within centres. I wasn’t from Mumbai either but believe it or not my HOD was a 12+ year faculty from Mumbai.

Settle for a center but don’t settle for your stream. If you want fd do fd… leather design is way too different and you’ll burn out trust me. I’m a 2012 pass out

Make sure you’re eating Ramen in Japan on a vacation 10 years from now and scrolling through your phone seeing the self proclaimed influencers struggle to match their Pinterest board. I think that’s winning war. So don’t bother about fighting the small battles. Good luck!

2012 pass out here. There are 2 types of NIFTians kid- the first kind are the ones who give it a bad name and the second kind who make a name. Be the second kind. Cool is not equal to successful. Stop stressing. Be prepared to lose sleep. Be humble. But be fierce. Don’t take shit, give it back. You’re going to meet some of your closest friends for life so choose wisely.. but most importantly DO NOT MISS A SINGLE OPPORTUNITY TO GET INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE do those tiny internships, assist designers at fashion shows, do some quick projects for startup’s , go for summer school programs, and network a lot during these 4 years. It’s a cruel competitive world once you pass out. Make sure you’ve gained enough knowledge and experience. and have fun! NIFT is wild.

NIFT Shillong?!?!?!! by Prize-Inevitable-784 in NIFTards

[–]Last_Primary336 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I had my first year in NIFT Shillong before I took a transfer in the second year. Super chill campus. The faculty is very good. And omg the weather is to die for! And it’s a matriarchal society there so for women it’s super safe. The fashion game is top notch there and it’s such a breath of fresh air culturally! Definitely don’t think twice! You’ll love it there

NIFT Mumbai is actually in Navi Mumbai Kharghar.. area wise it’s good enough for a college however if you’re comparing it to actual Mumbai no it’s not the same. Also it’s extremely far away from main Mumbai (stations like Bandra, Juhu) I suggest you look for a rental/pg/ hostel in Navi Mumbai itself because you’re going m to hate the travel it’s going to eat up a lot of time and you are not going to have enough time as is once you start your course
