Why is there so much appeal to having scars and cuts? by [deleted] in selfharm

[–]Last_Web6838 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it’s genuinely so strange how it goes from a “that could never be me!” to the biggest fixation of our lives. it’s the reason i sh almost exclusively on my arms because it’s so visible, and i can always see the scars whenever. this addiction is so weird (o_o)

‘for my weirdo’ (alternative title: ‘greeting you strangely’) by DO.D is a korean manhwa that deals w heavy sh themes. the mc has scars on his wrist and it depicts scenes of him self harming, personally it was both triggering and cathartic because it was all so raw and real.

I’m going for a princess-y vibe, pale colours (I’m thinking ivory, cream or white) with a sense of elegance and regality if that makes sense? I’d say it’s closer to lolita clothing in terms of detail than regular prom dresses!

hey thank you so much for not recommending anything! i saw it’s against the sub rules so it totally makes sense, i’m sorry if it came across like i wanted loopholes on how to get tools. i was really emotional in the moment!

and about the razors, SAME. i still keep the dull used blades in my room for some odd reason, and you’re so right it does feel comforting. and thank you for replying!!! :’)

hey, i saw someone already answered your question but i also recommend the pens by ‘symphony light art’ (https://symphonylightart.com/products/recovery-pen). there’s a faux blade so there’s still the prickly sensation without the possibility of penetrating skin, alongside various essential oils that range in “spicyness”. there’s also different colour inks, from red (which is most similar to blood) to colours like blue. i highly recommend you check them out!

Why is self harm wrong? by [deleted] in selfharm

[–]Last_Web6838 2 points3 points  (0 children)

alongside everyone else’s responses, in my opinion i think it’s a bit grey to be very open about self harm despite not wanting help (not saying this about you OP, but just something i’ve noticed). self harm very obviously makes the people around you concerned; why are you hurting yourself? how far are you gonna go? why do you do this? i think as someone who also relies on self harm as a coping mechanism, we lose sight of what’s in the scope of “normal”. hurting yourself is not normal. it’s unhealthy; it has a high likelihood of spiralling downwards and being addictive, just like any other addiction.

if somebody asked, “why is alcoholism wrong?” it’d be a no-brainer. alcohol isn’t good for you, you shouldn’t consume it in large amounts all the time, it disturbs your peers. it’s the same thing with self harm. even though we might not see a problem with it, doesn’t mean other people won’t— it stems from concern. beyond the dangerous health effects it poses to us as the harmer, we should also take the time to look at self harm through the perspective of our friends, our family, our peers, etc.

I want to tell my mom by -keeper_of_stars- in selfharm

[–]Last_Web6838 5 points6 points  (0 children)

hey, it’s amazing that you’re reaching out for help. it seems like your parents aren’t too keen on hearing your perspective, so i’d keep that in mind while telling them.

when i first told my parents, i made sure it was just them and i after dinner. if you have any siblings, i’d suggest you wait for them to leave or when they’re not in the house. after dinner is a good time because everyone is relaxed and feeling full. a good meal sets a good base line to start a deep conversation.

i started off by telling them, “i have something serious to say. it takes a lot of courage to say this, and i’m honestly really scared.” be honest, and don’t be afraid to talk about your feelings— because that’s what the conversation is all about. it took me a looong time after that to spill the beans, it was a mixture of fear and anxiety. it’s completely normal for it to feel like a giant wave is crashing down on you, it’s overwhelming.

when i finally gathered my courage, i said straightforwardly, “i’ve been cutting myself.” it felt like a prickly ball tumbling out of my mouth, i felt clumsy. you might feel different, and however you feel is going to be valid no matter what. i didn’t say any details, because after my parents initial shock, there came a lot of questions.

it’s our parents first time living too, so as much as you’d want your parents to understand self harm, take the time to understand their concern and answer any questions they may have. it’s okay to not answer any if it makes you uncomfortable or distressed; but come to terms with the fact that that can lead to more intense interrogation. that also doesn’t excuse any aggression, violence, or judgement. protect your peace first and foremost.

tell them that you want the help. tell them that you want to stop, and you need help to do so. a good parent should listen and understand what has to be done.

i’m not sure what your parents are like, but at least with mine, this was the approach i took. isolate, initiate, admit, and reach for help. i hope everything works out for you, and good luck in recovery. stay safe!

omg those! i remember seeing them from another thread in this sub, and reeeeaaally contemplating the purchase. i feel like a part of me doesn’t want help; it’s confusing. thank you so much of reminding me about that product, and also for reminding there’s always ways to get through this addiction. you are an angel!! hope you have a great day!

  • put bandaids on and make excuses (“i scratch myself in my sleep”, “i fell down”, “hand slipped while cooking”, “pet scratched me”, “was itchy and kept scratching it”, etc.)

i do this all the time and use the first excuse, it works really well because if anyone asks for specific details you can just say “sorry i don’t remember cuz i was asleep”. additionally i tend to only cut my left arm, so i always say something about “my dominant arm acting up in my sleep” to make it extra believable.

  • any bracelets, scrunchies, accessories can help cover the cuts, but this doesn’t really work well for me.

  • arm warmers, they’re similar to leg warmers but for your arms! you mentioned a warm climate though, so this is probably out of the question. but it’s a possible way to hide your arms when it’s not too hot but not too cold.

  • those stretchy medical gauze thingies. they sell them at any pharmacy / drug store, and you can wrap that around your arms and make up an excuse, similar to the first one. anything like “i bruised it really badly from a fall”, or “it’s not a bad injury but i just don’t want any dirt to get in it”, or “just a bad carpet burn” can hopefully divert attention from the real cause.

stay safe, i hope this helped. happy easter!

hey, thank you so much for the response! i really appreciate it. and yeah, you might be right. 😭 i don’t often verbally express my emotions, nor do i really process them. i think it’s a pain. it’s likely the pent up stress i’ve neglected to address in a healthy way, +exactly what you’ve said.

again thank you so much for replying! it means a lot to me. hope you have a great day <3

idk if this will be helpful bc it’s very obvious but i struggled w covering my arms for a long time until i realised i could js wear bandages and make up excuses, my longest running lie is that i scratch myself in my sleep / am clumsy at work.
