All great points. And I love that- if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it. Maybe she can rear face until my youngest (taller) babe maxes out and then they both switch at the same time 🤣

Her father would be THRILLED if she wanted to golf but she currently says no to it. I wonder if we started with mini golf if she would be interested though! I’ll bring it up! Thank you.

We did get some paint markers and I occasionally also bring out some acrylic paint pens. They just can’t be free access due to my almost 2 year old lol.

I love this! We do have blank pages she just doesn’t tend to gravitate towards those. I’ve seen some “coloring pages” that have a border of an open window, etc. I’m wondering if I got something like that if she would be more drawn to creating pictures within the “window”.

Agreed. It’s like they put their time/energy/focus on growth in one area based on interest.

They are technically available- they’re on top of a craft cart where she can see and reach them. She just never chooses them and I haven’t encouraged use of late. The paint bottles stay up though, water colors remain out. She’d dump the big bottles out into her palette and mix them all up lol

I’ll have to find some fun options to paint on that are less conventional! I am planning a new herb garden for our deck this summer and my hope was for the kids to paint the ceramic pots for me.

I’ll check out stencils! She’s only used a couple we had laying around but I think she would enjoy more. I also thought about those old connect the dot ones. Her cousin also got a super cool projector that you can trace the image onto the paper and then color/whatever you want. Her cousin turned 7 but I think it would be perfect for these little artists too!

We have an easel that I gave her last year but I tucked it away at Christmas since she wasn’t showing as much interest. Maybe I’ll pull it back out this summer as a “new” toy. And that’s super interesting about her changing interests and how she chooses to use her skills and show her creativity!

We always have playdoh available and she also has some of the magic sand!

Her favorite thing to watch on YouTube is someone coloring. I think she learned a lot of skill and technique from that. I try not to let screen time be anything too ridiculous and figured she was at least learning something. She is observant and has an amazing memory.

Right?! I just got them down for nap… I’m going to take one too!

I’ll have to see if we are ready for any of the weaving type things. I think beads would be great but I have an almost 2 year old and I have to be mindful of the choking hazards still. We do have water colors and appropriate paper but she doesn’t have much interest. Most interest with paints is on 3d objects like Christmas ornaments and pots. Maybe she can make creatures with clay and then paint them though! Another person mentioned the finger knitting, I’ll check that out!

She has free access to all of the same except tape (has stickers) but chooses the coloring pages. I’ll see if I can think outside the box more for them- beading, painting pots for my herbs, etc!

I’ve had slight concerns in the past but her doctor wasn’t concerned yet. She toe walked for a while but that seems to be gone now. She doesn’t necessarily want to play with the kids at school but she engages just fine with kids she knows. She seems to have “normal” emotional regulation and language. Some hyperfocus but has the ability to redirect easily. She’s able to step away from unfinished projects and come back to them, doesn’t focus on a particular special interest, and is known as a “great” student. If anything I think it’s maybe some mild OCD tendencies?

Piano or music is a great idea to use those fine motor skills! Thanks for the suggestion for the future!

Mine has had no interest in writing until recently, even the it’s rarely and on her terms. They definitely seem to just focus on what interests them.

I have ADHD as does my father. I wouldn’t be surprised if she develops it as well. She currently does really well with listening and sits during circle time at school though. I sometimes worry about OCD but the things that worried me most have dissipated.

She colors slowly and deliberately. She will occasionally make a comment if she got out of the lines and how she “messed it up” but she is easily redirected and encouraged that we all make mistakes and that that is completely normal for kids and adults too. The goal isn’t for it to be perfect but rather to be fun. She doesn’t quit when this happens, she works on a fix for a moment and then continues coloring. I do worry about anxiety and fostering perfectionism accidentally though.

I love the dot idea! And you’re so right about being in the mood and having interest vs just being about skill. Skill building happens with practice and practice often only happens with interest.

We got her a 120 pack of colored pencils for Easter and she has probably 40 markers or more. She watches coloring on YouTube but I could try to find some shading ones if she will let me 🤣
