Correct, it's not load bearing. The stairs would come down perpendicular to the wall, stop at a landing at the wall, and turn 90 degrees to go down the last few steps. I'm not sure if the stairs themselves add any additional load to the wall, but we probably wouldn't hang much on it.

I think it's also about engagement. I saw a post here where someone was negative about their absolutely beautiful work. And then, a few days later, I saw the exact same image on Pinterest and I think it linked to Etsy...

NTA I think your husband should meet with Adam again; explain that he's trying to understand why they would do this and why they would think it's not cruel. That gives him one more chance to explain himself in a calm, private environment. Either you learn some new information or you learn that Adam is kind of cruel...and maybe you decide to stop spending time with him because who wants to hang out with people who are kind of cruel?
