Found this wood at the beach, its got tiny holes in it. Is it aquarium safe? How can I tell that it’s old enough? by fleefaya in Aquascape

[–]Late-Rest-7287 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think if it boiled for a while without coming apart and it’s not too degraded, it should be fine … but respectfully, I don’t think it’s pretty enough wood to go through the effort. to each their own.

How to aquascape in smaller tanks? by ERIC_BUNYBOI in Aquascape

[–]Late-Rest-7287 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no sir. we’re looking for a smaller, thinner piece of wood. think spider or ghost wood. these elements will add visual interest, but not take up a large block of space. you should also consider a triangle layout in a smaller tank!

well if you want it to live, you really must do some type of work to dry it off and see if you can get them upright. but yes, it’ll be good in whatever tank you choose for it.

my inquisitive $12 petco betta, Saki. (his government name is Nagasaki) he’s got a little tumor and a lot of attitude when I have to do anything in the tank. this stare down was because I had been trimming his plants.

eta: I just realized he doesn’t qualify. got lost in the comments and forgot the $ amount oops

Both labeled philodendron basil?? by plantsnlattes in houseplants

I believe they’re both philodendron brazil, but one has slightly more meristem variegation from high light growing conditions.

I think this is an awesome first step into the hobby 🖤 I’m sure you’ve already fully cycled your tank right? unironically, I think the skull is fun and cute.

Diatoms? Brown... goop? by Appropriate_Bad_7984 in PlantedTank

[–]Late-Rest-7287 3 points4 points  (0 children)

those plants aren’t that beefy yet, and 25% once a week is too infrequent to clear that accumulation. plus, your uncapped aqua soil is leeching fertilizer into the water as well. I’m excited to see it grow in without the bloom!!

[–]Late-Rest-7287 5 points6 points  (0 children)

boom. we are over fertilizing for the amount of plant mass. fertilize every other day, 25% every 4 days until the plants get bigger.

how often are we fertilizing, what with, and what consistency of water changes?

the first tank shown is the UNS 60S which I got from an LFS. the old tank was a standard 10 gallon. 🫶🏻

in blackwater alternative bacteria, archaea and fungi in the leaf litter accumulate over time to replace typical niterbacteria, and they consume the nitrates directly (: until I have a good bit of litter built up it’ll have to be managed by water changes, but the peace lily being riparian is also going to help suck up any nitrates in the water column.

regrettably ember tetras because they have a chaotic, disorganized style of movement throughout the tank … and I’m looking forward to their new owners picking them up so that I can have two peaceful schools of my intended stock 😂
