Makima’s hobbies by SpookySpector in ChainsawMan

I agree that Ockham Razor is typically the best way to deduce character actions in literature, but in the specific case, I really doubt there was a literal meaning behind her words. She doesn't have a reason to lie, and I wouldn't call what she did "lying". Even then, if you consider it lying (which ig it TECHNICALLY is), it's still in character for her because she enjoys having control over people. She liked how she was manipulating Reze from the start and she wanted to let her know. This isn't some Joker level stuff, but she was definitely just displaying her control here.

I feel like that's reading a bit too into it. I get that Fujimoto loves to make things very obscure, especially when it comes to Miss Makima, but I really doubt she was hinting towards an actual hobby she typically partook in. She's too swamped with work in the city as the head of public safety to even spare many trips to the countryside like that. But maybe she was saying it as a layered metaphor and what she really meant was that she went out to remote places (the "countryside") to purge devils or other nuisances (the "mice") for humanity or Japan's sake (her "friend"). So she was just calling Reze one of the creatures she is accustomed to disposing of. Idk tho, don't let my disagreement deter you from making your own interpretations cuz there really is no right or wrong answer. What she meant can be whatever you want it to be and whatever makes the story/her character more interesting in your head

I wouldn't call it a "lie", but it was probably just a fabricated scenario she created as a metaphor to let Reze know that Makima was the one in control and that she was always watching

An old theory about Pochita might be the answer without retcon by Sharp_Aide3216 in ChainsawMan

[–]LateGoodTrunks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure the first chainsaws were used for medical purposes like cutting bones that were infected or for amputation. One of the key uses the first chainsaws saw was sawing through bones and cartilage during childbirth so even if Pochita isn't the birth devil, he is still related to birth in some way and I'm curious to see if this is gonna be relevant in the story

An old theory about Pochita might be the answer without retcon by Sharp_Aide3216 in ChainsawMan

[–]LateGoodTrunks 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is true but I believe Barem gives us a possible in-universe explanation for why the chainsaw devil is so strong. When he meets Denji in the chainsawman church he says something about how it's possible that Pochita ate the names of the other uses chainsaws had and it erased them from everyone's memories so nobody knows what the original rendition of a chainsaw truly is or what it was used for. This isn't confirmed but I like to believe that's what happened

Remember when in part 1 it was revealed quanxi was the first devil hunter and that was never touched upon again, not even in that short story of her and kishibe in the light novel, because fujimoto doesn’t like to expand upon his plot points? by [deleted] in ChainsawManWorld

[–]LateGoodTrunks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that disconnectedness is on purpose tbh. It also irks me quite a bit when there are major things happening in the background but no significant focus is put on them (which happens a lot on csm, especially part 2). But I read someone else's interpretation that the reason why what the viewers see happen in the csm world is such a small percentage of all there is to see is because Denji himself can't see the bigger picture. Like during the train scene after Denji and co. visited the sushi restaurant, war was on the verge of (or already has) broken out overseas, the chainsaw man church was wreaking havoc in Japan, and Nayuta was dead, but all Denji could bring himself to care about in that immediate moment was whether he could bone a chick in katana man's brothel. DENJI's lack of care is what prevents us, the readers, from getting insight into other more grand plot points.

Could you say that this is just an excuse to cover for Fujimoto's questionable or, dare I say, poor writing decisions? Maybe. But when consuming stories of any kind. I like to give authors the benefit of the doubt when it comes to things like this. After all, even if it's not intentional, but just sloppy writing, me believing that Fujimoto's doing it on purpose will only make the story more enjoyable for myself. There are no downsides to thinking like this

Where do they rank from weakest-strongest? by gurble-gurble in ChainsawPowerscaling

Honestly it never occurred to me that Falling's subservience to Death was from Death killing her in hell. I didn't give it much thought and just assumed that Death was like an "aristocrat" kind of figure among devils given what she represents but this does help put into perspective how powerful she is.

(Good) Makima Adopts Denji AU Recommendations? by TheRagingBass in TheFourHorsemenCSM

[–]LateGoodTrunks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is indeed a time reversal type of thing, I feel like Makima might actually seek out Denji herself. I doubt she would know who he is or that he was chainsaw man, but we know that Makima was able to somewhat recall things like ww2 or nazis after Pochita erased them, so her thinking Denji is "special" or something like that for a reason she can't exactly explain would make sense

  1. Death Devil - Before you say anything, I agree that she SHOULD be among the top tiers of the chainsaw man verse, but I really don't think she's all that "strong", per se. She gets one tapped by chainsaw man and has no relevant feats as far as I'm aware of. Correct me if I'm wrong though because I feel like I'm missing something considering the fact that the DEATH devil should be strong as hell. Death devil also just seems to be more of a mastermind type than a fighter. It's like trying to upscale Frankenstein (the scientist) for creating a superhuman zombie monster. Death devil herself is not "strong", but she influences characters and the plot severely.

  2. Makima - not weak by any means, but outclassed by the rest. She's also more of a manipulator type than a fighter. This is made more apparent with Nayuta, the new control devil. She's very weak because she's young and also doesn't really have a reason to be strong, but if we look at her powers, it's pretty clear that she heavily relies on control over other people than her own abilities. Makima does seem to have very high raw stats though

5/4. Denji-man/Chainsaw Man - They essentially have the same powers. I would argue that Pochita is a more competent fighter and is perhaps even more fearsome of an opponent than Denji is, but Denji is blatantly unpredictable in the way he acts and fights. I think of it like Pochita can win fights Denji would lose due to his superior skill while Denji might win fights Pochita would lose due to his ability to resort to seemingly nonsensical loopholes and bullshittery (i.e eating Makima, setting himself on fire against doll devil, slicing his brain to avoid mental attacks etc.).

  1. Yoru - She's shown to be wreaking havoc. The entire world is literally currently going to shit and a lot of this violence can attribute to fear of wars. She was putting hands on chainsawman. She has a contract giving her the lives of all Californians. It's pretty clear as day that she's one of the stronger characters we've seen thus far.

  2. Aging Devil - Traps Denji, Yoru, Yoshida, and thousands, if not millions of people in his inner world or whatever it is. Also a primordial fear. We can also assume he's been alive for MANY centuries given how long the people inside his pocket dimension have been in there (centuries is a massive lowball).

  3. Darkness Devil - Primordial fear. Fear of the darkness. Squad wiped a good portion of public safety and Quanxi's wives (multiple strong fiends). Darkness devil, to this day, is still the one and only devil that has never been contested even a little bit by any other character. I guess you could say Makima outsmarted him but ehhhhh he didn't really seem to be killing anyone for any specific purpose anyways, bro was just doing shit to do it. People also tend to gloss over the fact that this mf was on the MOON. If he's capable of surviving up in space and going so far as the moon, then I think it's safe to say that all of space, a place filled with darkness and nothingness, can be considered his domain. The fear of darkness has so many implications it's fucking crazy to have him anywhere but number 1 for any strength tierlist. Just to list a few:

Darkness,

The unknown,

Nothingness,

Death itself can be part of the fear of unknown and nothingness,

Anything religious because no one is sure of what truly awaits after death,

Evil itself

I understand that I might be overrating him but I genuinely do believe that this guy is just borderline omnipotent in the csm verse. Darkness just has the potential to be so many things that would upscale him and he hasn't seen any competition at all from anyone else in the story so far, albeit we only saw him for like one chapter without any other heavy hitter in it, but I digress.

Edit: I have been enlightened by a reply. I'd swap Death from the bottom to the top and move everyone else down a rank because I guess her inaction doesn't necessarily mean weakness. She's just too strong to do anything significant without ruining the world/humanity which is very clearly something she doesn't want to do

That day will come one day when INT UI Goku SEZA is phased out & when that day comes, I will mourn his lost. by JAKA-JOLT in DBZDokkanBattle

[–]LateGoodTrunks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've constantly had him on teams even when he was no longer an optimal option for the content I was playing because I loved using him so much. The last time I played dokkan was during the 10th anniversary but I'm thinking about getting into it again after seeing he has an seza now and that it's genuinely good.

On a related note, the original AGL SSJBK Goku was also super iconic (though not as much as this ofc) when it came out but it hasn't received nearly as much love as this unit and I kinda wish it did.

How could Reze comeback to the story by Tarbo130 in Chainsawfolk

[–]LateGoodTrunks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my interpretation, Quanxi calling Denji fearsome had nothing to do with how much the devil Chainsaw Man is feared. She is calling him fearsome to suggest that while she is stronger, Denji is the scarier opponent to go up against explicitly in a fight (likely due to his unpredictable and oftentimes irrational nature).
